Return of God - war and peace according to a fundie...
I listentened to a happy camper this morning on C-Span and heard something that never registered with me. I assumed the man was a typical fundamentalist-believe-Bush no matter what.

Then he said (paraphrasing) = there won't be peace until Christ returns.

Is that their entire justification for endless wars? It is OK to go to war and kill because God hasn't sent his Son back yet?

Is that what is preached to them?

2. Pretty much
It's also partly why fundamentalists are big supporters of Israel. Israel has to be around for Jesus to return to according to their interpretations of the Bible (and I suspect they hope that Jesus will punish the Jews for rejecting Him).

3. Yep
The end of the world is coming so there's no reason to worry about environmental concerns, nor is there any reason to have a social security program--after all by the time most of us retire, the millenium will have started (1000 years of peace when Christ rules). Also, there can be nothing but war between now and the second coming. So there is little point in crying peace peace.

Of course there is also that bit about how "No man knows the hour of the coming of the Lord." And also that bit on "Blessed are the Peacemakers." Somehow those get overlooked.

I don't want to make it seem like I don't respect these beliefs (to a certain extent I share them), but just that planning your political beliefs around the world ending seems short sighted.

4. It depends on what denomination they are. Some preach that the thousand
years of Peace do not start until Jesus returns.

Of course, many pay no heed to the whole second coming bit any way:

5. I always thought they could have their beliefs that I considered
ugly, bizarre, unchristian, antithetical to everything I was raised to believe, but to each their own. Now, I'm looking at things differently - this is a matter of life. They seem bent on killing and accepting of killing.

Aren't any of them going to rise and live up to a higher standard of let people and the earth live?

Aren't we supposed to evolve?

6. They are afraid and angry... very dysfunctional people to begin with.
I have yet to figure out how to help free them from that, so that they CAN grow.
