Who would I contact re: Rice/Gonzales hearings?
A student who works in our office needs to contact politicians regarding different topics. She wishes to contact those who have a say regarding the confirmations of Rice and Gonzales. Should she contact her congressman, or a specific committee member, or a high-ranking dem? Any advice would be appreciated.

1. Well, here is a link to Yahoo where she can put in her zip code and
it will list everyone that represents her and let her e-mail them directly

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=index&cid=703

Scroll down a little and it is on the left side.

2. She should contact her Senators
The vote will be before the full Senate.

She can contact them via e-mail at www.senate.gov.

3. Also at the link senate.gov
are links for the various committes responsible for approving the nominations and submitting them to the full senate for a vote. See the COMMITTEES link

The Judiciary Committee held the hearing for Alberto Gonzales' nomination.

The Foreign Affairs Committee held the nomination for Condi Rice.

There are lists there of all the senators on the committeess and you can link-through to contact information for each of them.

4. FCNL
Friends Committee on National Legislation has frequent opportunities for action in which you can participate with minimal or greater effort.

One of the current actions is: to "Join in Public Witness Against Torture" by writing congress in opposition to the Gonzales nomination. If you follow this link: http://capwiz.com/fconl/home/

and select the "Join in Public Witness Against Torture" you can put your zip code in and get access to a letter template and a collection of paragraph style talking points. You can include a few, or a lot. You can edit the points to personalize it, give it your own subject heading, and send it on its way to all of the appropriate congress people for your zip code.

There are lots of other general sources, but FCNL generally has frequent ways to take action that DU'ers are generally in agreement with - so I offer it in case you or others want to bookmark it.

(FCNL also has general contact information for congress.)

7. Thanks for the fixes
The link didn't look right when I pasted it in (since it was not the home page I was heading for), but I followed it from the post preview and it took me back to the correct page.

Doesn't work this morning - but your first link gets to the same place I was trying to link to...so I'm glad you provided a correction.
