David Aikman (religious Bush cronie) admits Jefferson was not a Christian

In terms of religiosity, Aikman compares Bush to Democrats Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter and Republicans Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley.

Even Thomas Jefferson -- a deist -- recognized the importance of religion, Aikman said.

"Although he wasn't a Christian, Jefferson believed very much what this president believes -- that America has a sort of moral contract with the Almighty which requires Americans to be very careful about the way they behave," Aikman said.

Aikman's 2004 book, "A Man of Faith: The Spiritual Journey of George W. Bush," examines the Christian walk of America's 43rd president.

2. His assessment is Bullshit
"Although he wasn't a Christian, Jefferson believed very much what this president believes -- that America has a sort of moral contract with the Almighty which requires Americans to be very careful about the way they behave,"

Jefferson believed nothing of the kind.

Jefferson believed that the narrow moral codes and dogma of organized religion were inimical to the fundamental liberty granted to all by the "God of Nature."

Jefferson was a deist through and through and had nothing in common with George W. Bush in terms of religious philosophy.

6. all the Fundamentalist Christians of the day called Jefferson a deist...
and yet Jefferson regularly attended church as a Presbyterian and sometimes the Unitarians, which was still a Christian organization (though a liberal one)at that point.
Deist was a charge that was thrown at people all the time when they were not sufficiently conservative in their theology.

The fact is that only Benjamin Franklin claimed to be a deist.
