Enough of this
I've been having fun perusing all these threads talking about how we're doomed, that there's no turning back now, that a police state is upon us, that facism won't be stopped, and other such nonesense.

To those people who want to just roll over and die, you want to slash along the vein lines so it will go faster. For the rest of us, I don't know about you, but my sword is ready and I have made my peace with my Gods.

Think about the heritage of this country.

Think about the men and women who have fought, bled, and died on the field of battle, in the streets, in the factories, in the parks, at the universities and colleges, even in the halls of Congress itself, so that we could be a working democracy.

And may the Gods strike me down if I lie, dammit it worked for a little past 200 years! 200 years, every generation with the rights of the masses being expanded, in spite of wars, the growth of corporations, economic collapses, and poor policy descisions. Think about that.

What other country, in the history of the Western world, can boast such a pedigree?

That does NOT mean, however, that we are going to pull this off just by "waiting for the inevitability of the dialectic" and other such propaganda. EVERY time in this nation's history that the rights of the downtrodden, the powerless, and the meek were advanced, it was because people met the challenge head-on, stood their ground, gritted their teeth, and FOUGHT.

Nothing in history, no great gains or victories, no great advances or triumphs, were made by those who did not act.

The 300 Spartans didn't have to make their futile stand at Thermapolaye, but because they did, Greece remained free of the Persian Empire.

George Washington didn't have to lead the Continental Army against the British, but because he did, we are a country.

Abraham Lincoln could have let the Southern states go without a fight and say "good riddance," but he didn't and we are still one country, and the descendants of slaves now help run the country that once oppressed them.

Winston Churchill could have made peace with Hitler and looked the other way instead of digging in his heals and telling Hitler WHERE he could shove it, but I don't need to say what would have happened if he didn't.

The Maquis didn't have to fight after the fall of France, but because they did, D-Day was a success.

Truman didn't have to defy the Soviet blockade of Berlin, but he did because he refused to see the one island in a sea of Stalinist-dominated territory go under.

Kennedy didn't have to blockade Cuba to keep the nukes out, he didn't have to face down Kruschev, but the way he did averted nuclear war.

Martin Luther King didn't have to serve as the figurehead and the symbol for the Civil Rights Movement, a role that cost him his life, but he chose to because it was the right thing to do.

To the inevitable response of, "But they didn't have to face what we are stuck with now," I say to you, "So what!"

The greatest evil that any one person can commit is not the slaughter of innocents, the violation of many people, or the devastation of entire lands. No, the greatest evil is to watch such things be perpetuated and do nothing to stop it.

Those who stand by a mourn the passing of democracy and do nothing more, or pack their bags to flee the country, you are just as bad as the people who voted Bush back into office.

Why?

Because by doing nothing, by failing to act when you should, you are giving Bush just as much of a free pass as his backers.

Dante once said, "There is a place in hell for those who remain neutral in times of great moral crisis."

I don't believe in a hell, but I do believe in that sentiment.

What is your choice, run and hide, or stand and fight like Americans!

2. THANK YOU!
My sentiments, exactly! We are patriotic Americans too, and we're damn well going to stand up and fight for this country, which is still the greatest country in the world!

Like Clinton said, "There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America."

3. One of the problems with living in a red state
is that all of your senators and congressmen are republican. So writing to them is pointless and gets you no where. I have been writing to blue state senators and congressmen telling them of this problem. We literally have no representation but have no choice but to be taxed to pay these people's salary.

I told my husband tonight that I see a civil war coming if things don't change. I don't want to see this happen but my guess is if we invade Iran it will happen. I have become convinced that Bush and his cronies are determined to bring down the United States.

It occurred to me today when Bush kept saying Freedom for other countries that these Right wing religious nuts think of freedom as Jesus. They truly believe that that is what he means. The comment he made about those that embrace the freedom fire will be warmed and those who don't will be burned seemed almost as a bush biblical prophecy. He sees himself as a prophet such as Noah, or Mohammad. This is very disturbing to me and frankly I am starting to get scared.
I don't have the freedom to pack up and leave this state. I must stay here and I will continue to try to build our base here. But, please understand that those of us in red states need real help. We are facing brick walls. We need some big ass jackhammers.

6. No problem
Same position as the Maquis up until 1944.

You will have your D-Day if there is anything I have to say about that.

9. Red stater here!
And I said the same damn thing today! That if we invade Iran, it will be Civil War here.

But, I do know this - just keep chip, chip, chipping away at those brick walls. We are the media and we have to break apart those wingnuts who have toasted our red states. Call in and call 'em out. Write in and write 'em out.

It's time to YELL from the rooftops that KILLING IS NOT CHRIST'S WAY.

Take back your church, take back your media and we will take back America.

4. the ending of your statement
You don't believe in hell huh? Look at the idiots running this country. It is hell in charge and running wild! Very scary considering that they could be in office for the next 2-3 decades!

5. I'll put it this way
My faith has no concept of some place of fiery eternal torment. Mankind has the power to unleash that whenever they choose by letting loose the dogs of war.

Now a question for you:

If you believe that we will be in hell in a sense for the next several years, are you going to run and hide, or are you going to brave the heat and fight back?

7. "Think about the heritage of this country."
A partial list of US military interventions from 1890 to 1999:

Chile 1891
Haiti 1891
Hawaii 1893
Korea 1894-1896
Philippines 1898-1910
Guam 1898-still there
Puerto Rico 1898-still there
Panama 1901-1914
Cuba 1912
Nicaragua 1912-1933
Cuba 1917-1933
Haiti 1914-1934
Greece 1947-1949
Iran 1953
Guatemala 1954
Angola 1976-1992 millions killed
Viet Nam 1960-1975 millions killed
Iraq 1990-present bombed every day for 13 years straight millions killed

I'll stop here and didn't include the millions killed in the slave trade and the genocide of the original people. America is founded on violence. sadly your last three words "fight like Americans" are true. Read KILLING HOPE by William BLUM. what is listed barely scratches the surface.

8. I am not ignoring all of that
No country is perfect, I dare you to find ANY nation that exists today with a past as pure as driven snow. I am not pretending that the US is perfect, far from it. If I felt that the US is, then I wouldn't be here.

Now I ask you, are you going to run, or are you going to fight? Do you want to work to move American past what it has done, or are you going to do nothing and let it slide back to where it has been?

14. i am an activist
involved every day but the notion of america is a falsehood that keeps people in the dark. artificial demarcations with stripes on a banner and pretty lies on parchment mean nothing to me. parochialism limits your overall vision. i live in a watershed with the land. i love my family and friends not my country. it is time we changed our language and our approaches. we need new modes.

10. Stand and fight like an American of course
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 12:55 AM by Laurab
and what a beautiful post. The pessimism has been a bit distressing to me, as well. My 72 year old MOM is beginning to stand and fight. She's signing petitions, writing letters - and I thought I got a late start because I'm in my late 40's, and was pretty apolitical until I "met" GWChimp. That took care of the apathy, and the more I learned, the less apathetic I got. I can't afford to be apathetic. Anyone who is aware of what he's doing can't afford to be.

Why should I flee the country? This is MY country damn it. And OUR country. It's not *'s country, and we must remove that delusion from him. I think it can and will be done, and I will certainly try to do my part. Besides, mom's on it!

edit: typo

11. Fascism will be stopped...
eventually. It will probably take the blood of our countrymen and women and may rip the nation into 2 different sections, but fascism will be defeated.

13. Couldn't have said it better
Thanks knights!

I am completely ready to stand up for justice in this "time of great moral crisis"!

It's not a gay problem or a race problem or a Muslim problem, it's a serious human moral problem that we face.

I stand up against ignorance and self denial.

What are we to do?
