WP retracts story on Saddam era torture

By Our Correspondent

WASHINGTON, Jan 20: The Washington Post on Thursday retracted a 2003 story about an Iraqi woman who claimed to have been arrested, sexually assaulted and made to watch soldiers of the Saddam regime mutilating her husband's body.

"Fresh examination of her statement," shows that Jumana Michael Hanna, had "made false claims about her past," the Post said. Hanna's story was used, among others, by US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz in congressional testimony to justify the invasion of Iraq.

2. Oops, made an error
Now, let's see if this gets the same hoopla and circus that the Dan Rather story gets. Failure to do so will result in a bias being shown in our media.

but then claimed how it was so difficult to get accurate info from such a closed society regarding WMD's?

8. Yeah! And it wasn't just "Saddam kills babies"...
I also remember when the mainstream media (TV, cable news) showed where Saddam had allegedly gassed, or tortured, or somehow killed, dogs.

Does anyone remember that? The propagandists realized that sometimes cruelty to animals is THE thing that can really get people's backs up. So they had this story, complete with lots of horrifying video, showing Saddam's regime supposedly gassing dogs.

There is just no way anyone with a brain could see how they hyped that "story", and NOT realize that we were being seriously played.

7. Will she be kicked out now?
"Based on her testimony, US officials took her into protective custody in Baghdad, and then brought to the US where she received political asylum and financial support."

The government will be demanding that she repays the financial support she got, and will press charges for false statements, and then will ship her out, right?

Or will she be getting one of those freedom award necklaces?

10. Yeah, since she lied and received political asylum from INS
will they deport her and the rest of her family back to Iraq?

This will be an interesting case to follow.
