2. However....
if the thumb were out to the side instead of folded over the middle
it would mean "I love you"

FWIW

5. Since you seem to know about sign language
And forgive me because I have almost no knowledge of it's origin, when did the use of sign language begin? Meaning, when was it really well established.

Thanks!

6. It's more of a U of Texas thing than the state
I don't care that they do it. It was a Southwest Conference tradition, back in the day when that conference still existed. A&M, Tech, TCU, Baylor, and possibly others all have hand signals to indicate you're rooting for their school.

8. that sign means "bull", not "bullshit"
in asl, the sign for "bullshit" includes the left wrist under the right elbow, with the left fingers dangling down, wiggling.

and, unlike the article, i have more than a single source.

9. True - but EU sign lanuage differs from US
:-)

Indeed that is all I know about EU sign language!

I thought the article referred to reactions in the EU?

14. You are correct - I did not read the American Sign Lanuage claim
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 02:49 PM by papau
but I should have read the article before posting.

In any case, the Daily News - like the Post - is not known for accuracy!

Some Confused By Bush's 'Satanic' Salute
In Texas, Sign Shows Support For School

POSTED: 11:11 am EST January 21, 2005

OSLO, Norway -- President George W. Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

20. haha! that reminds me of an old photo of maggie thatcher
she had her fingers up in a "v" shape, but she had her hand turned around so the back of her hand was showing instead of the front.

palm side out is the usual "v"-for-victory salute, but in britain (as well as in many other countries), back side out, the "v" is an gesture with several possible meanings, all of them obscene.

11. Thanks for confirming that
I didn't think UT would have kept that symbol for that long if it really did mean bullshit.

10. So where does * get off using that sign?
His application to UT was turned down--he never went to any university in the state. Laura got her library degree at UT, but there are plenty of Texans who find that particular hand gesture offensive, and I'm pretty sure more Aggies are aliented by the hook 'em (they would say 'hook 'em hippies) than Longhorns are enchanted.

When that Texas marching band walked by * yesterday, all doing the horns sign in unison, it reminded me of a parade in Berlin 1939.
Very creepy!
