Billy Graham: "God had a hand in Bush's re-election"
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 04:08 PM by Bluebear

Offering one prayer, the Rev. Billy Graham said he believed God had a hand in Bush's re-election.

"Their next four years are hidden from us, but they are not hidden from you," said the 86-year-old evangelist, whom Bush credits with inspiring him to reaffirm his faith and give up drinking at age 40. "You know the challenges and opportunities they will face. Give them a clear mind, a warm heart, calmness in the midst of turmoil, reassurance in times of discouragement and your presence always."

7. Yep.
We keep hearing about how the repubs are only claiming to be Christians but are really not. Yet, every churchie with a microphone and a national audience supports the odious vermin. Not a single voice of opposition at the national level from any of the "good" ones. Are there any?

Maybe our conception of what is Christian, and what is not, needs to be updated to properly reflect common usage.

11. I am surprised that Billy Graham would make such a statement.
He must be on medication. I have always admired him until now. He really thinks that God chose a war-mongering liar instead of a man of true faith. That is an insult of a very grievous kind to John Kerry.

14. billy graham is a hateful anti-semite and bootlicker to power
Go back and listen to the Nixon tapes sometime.

THere is nothing admirable about this piece of trash in my book.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

40. Nixon tapes...
"...this conversation with Billy Graham is something else again. Here is the most admired and influential religious leader in America complaining to the president of the United States about the Jews and their "stranglehold" on the media, and blaming them for "all the pornography."

Even when Nixon replies that he agrees but "can't say that" in public, Graham presses the point: Yes, right, but if you get elected to a second term, then we could do something about the problem.

Graham adds that while many Jews are friendly to him, "they don't know how I really feel about what they are doing to this country."

30. His quotes in the article are different than this statement
It was the reporter's interpretation of his remarks.

Most evangelicals believe God has influence over much of daily life. I refuse to get upset about it. Let's pick our battles. Let them believe what they want but fight when anyone wants to make it a state religion.

17. More fundamentalist drivel from Billy Graham.
He seems to be a guy who just can't get enough of imbecilic Republican presidents.

Especially imbecilic Republican presidents who wage immoral and/or illegal wars.

(Nixon in S.E. Asia, Reagan in Central America, and Dubya in Iraq. Billy evidently has no problem with asking God's blessing on these wars.)

32. and to think some people have this ridiculous notion
that God never makes mistake.
Billy might wanna check this out:
Proverbs 6: 16 - "There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers."
Sounds like JR Bush to me.

38. this is why i hate religiosity.
especially christianity and other authoritarian religions. it makes people stupid, and it does it on purpose. it rewards unquestioningly submissive behavior toward self-proclaimed christian "leaders", actively discourages skepticism toward anything those leaders endorse, and encourages blind disbelief in everything they don't. it provides a framework, and a community to provide rewards and punishments designed to maintain exactly those behaviors.

arguing that christianity, or any other authoritarian religion "can be good" is like arguing that dictatorships likewise "can be good." after all they can, till the dictator changes. by then the system is already in place. the tools for manipulation and oppression are already there, waiting to be used, no how benevolent the organization is or pretends to be.

44. Graham is in awe of power, and that's all. He was a fan of Clinton's, too.
And the fact that he seems in thrall with both men tells me that he's drawn to their power, not who they are as a person. What an empty, empty man.
