I wish a conservative would explain "freedom" to me
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 04:21 PM by OnionPatch
I watch how they want to suppress freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom from religion, etc. and I wonder what it is exactly that they mean when they say "freedom." Freedom to oppress and exploit people with no interference? Freedom to take the resources of other countries? Freedom to make everyone adhere to their particular religious beliefs? Freedom for the government to search our homes without us knowing? Freedom to love only those whom they approve of?

They talk freedom, freedom, freedom, you see these bumper stickers saying "vote freedom first", you hear Bush talking about bringing "freedom" to the rest of the world, etc. and for the life of me, I can't understand what sort of freedom they're talking about because they're against just about every kind of freedom that I value!! :wtf:

I don't converse with many cons. Does anyone have a clue as to what they even think freedom is?

5. I'm not a conservative, but I imagine the argument goes like this:
People should be allowed to do what they are capable of doing, without interference from government. If they are stupid enough to be exploited by slick commercial interests, they should get smarter so as to make better decisions for themselves. No one should tell them how they MUST behave, only how they SHOULD behave.

9. They would rather we be not the government, but......
THE MARKET! After all, the market is all about fear, sex, hunger, aggression - it's fun! Government is about fairness, progress, sharing... no fun.

11. If you can find a conservative that could think straight
they still couln't explain why they are so shut down from humanity. They use thier brain funtions only to rationalize thier greed racism and classism. They feel cornered mentally and start spewing " god made it this way ",if you don't agree with thier script you don't believe in God......the god they worship should be called " DUH " I always thought God would want us to think and learn instead of say that god told us not to think and learn.
The freedom they want most is the freedom to not think and say that is part of God's plan.

14. I don't know...
All I know is that the word "Freedom" was a favorite of Hitler's in his speeches as well, "spreading freedom" and all that crap.

Your question is a good one...What does it mean to them?

15. Freedom means what it has always meant here
there's been no change: freedom = the ability of our corporations to act overseas without any hindrances. all else is lip service.

barbary pirates, united fruit company, standard oil, etc. the federal government has always acted militarily overseas when corporate interests are threatened. when it is "just" human rights that are threatened we stand by and watch. see haiti.

iraq is not an exception to this rule.

16. Do they not understand
that the masses live in relative slavery because of their "freedom" or do they just not care?

18. That's tricky
to bring "freedom" to others diverts you from your own problems with slavery.

My opinion: Every hierachy is slavery. They make it with the money. The money we know and how its used means slavery- because every process was made to a financial transaction, and all self-acting was robbed by state and taxes- and so you have to make debt, you have to work in bad paid jobs to come trough...

I like theory of anarchy, and what we call "Freigeld" here in Germany, a money with trans-action cost instead of positive interest.
So there is no need for exponentially growth of money and debt-pairs.
Silvio Gesell, a german-argentinian buyer, had established this theory and it was practised in austrian Wörgl in the great depression.

17. That's it
I totally agree to your point of view.

If Shrub uses "freedom" so inflate further, I'll disagree with any kind of "freedom-idea"!

New-Speak!
