Proof Positive that Abraham Lincoln would not fit in with Bush's GOP
"The Bible is not my book, and Christianity is not my religion. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma."

--Abraham Lincoln

"My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them."

--Abraham Lincoln

11. Actually...
...as I understand it, the "new twist" is actually more in line with the original ribald meaning of the phrase.

I guess I wasn't supposed to know how he felt about the topic.

4. as a young man,
Lincoln wrote a piece questioning the existance of God. He was never a member of a church, though he did attend the Presbyterian Church in Springfield with his family.

6. What years were those statements made?
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 07:58 PM by El Supremo
I have read opinions that he originally was a deist who started attending church regularly during his Presidency.

I have also read that even though he talked about God often, he never quoted from the New Testament.

7. Considering what happened in his presidency
That doesn't surprise me. There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole.

8. It may have been more a reaction...
to his son's death and his wife's mental state.
Personally, I think he cared little about all the soldier's deaths.

12. Nonsense...
...there could be an atheist in a foxhole. People participate in wars not only for their god, but for country or family as well. And then there are mercenaries, communists. That phrase "no atheists in a foxhole" has always bothered me as one of those things people who have never been in foxholes say to try and convince themselves of it.

13. Proof positive?
who needs proof. those "truths are self-evident";) furthermore, its evident that this Repub party is neither Republican nor Christian,so i dont see why it would matter. And given the fact that they book Stephen Baldwin and Hillary Duff as their headliners nor are they a "party"<bad-dum-dum) To read Lincoln and chimp in the same paragraph, to imply that there's even a comparison, is embarssing.
