'Official' Winter Storm Thread - wants going in your area?
Just for the fun of it, please report what the weather is like your area if you are in the path of the midwest/northeast snowstorm - ice, snow totals, wind, etc. I'm in Pittsburgh and nothing yet.

124. Sun 9 AM, over a foot & snow drifts
the door to the deck was frozen shut so I braved over a foot of snow beside the house and thawed the door open.

then snow-blowed the driveway, freezing my fingers in the process.

It isn't snowing currently, but the wind had picked up so expect drifts.

I think we need an emoticon that portrays frozen but smiling DUers :)

Who recalls days when the snow fell so heavy for so many
days cops told you to park in a hotel lot because
your street would not be passable for at least 24 hours.
This little blizzard is nothing.

70. I was in NY also during that blizzard.
For a solid week the main street in my town was locked down, snow plows working overtime every night, dumping snow in an empty lot. It was surreal, but also quite an experience.

71. I remember when
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 09:33 AM by PaDUer
the roads were totally closed. Neighbors had to dig tunnels from their front door to the middle of the street if they wanted to walk to the local store, and at that time, my father had to carry me on his shoulders. We do NOT get those kind of snowstorms here in NE PA anymore, and what's funny about it now, is that when a newscaster says a snowstorm is coming, 1-3", the stores are packed solid as if they planning a party.
-edit-I'm looking forward to a "good" snowstorm. :-)

I'm west of the city, so will see more than others to the east and south, now they've upped it from 4 to 8, to 6 to 10 inches. We'll see.
Should start early to mid-morning and pick up by afternoon.

Just spare me from that icy mix crap, is all I gotta say.

I love snow. I'm actually pretty excited about getting a decent snowfall. Just wish it was for Monday, not Saturday. Sigh.

We are expecting sleet around dawn. Then we will get freezing rain and snow. Accumulations over the whole day tomorrow will equal about a 1/4" of ICE. Then the weather will continue into Sunday but with a wintry mix of snow and sleet I think?

20. Houston, TX.
We were at 74 degrees today.

We did have a "first" on Christmas. It was the first time in the recorded history of Houston that it snowed on Christmas eve and day. It lasted just long enough to make a few snowmen and get cold enough to warrant some hot chocolate.

I hear we may get below freezing tomorrow night which is very big news around here. Time to cover the palm trees again. lol

30. Ah, that was one to remember
I recall standing in my driveway just behind my car which was about 10 - 12 feet from the curb and my husband standing at the curb, each with our shovels. We dug for over an hour and I maybe cleared a foot and a half and he cleared about two or so. Our neighbor who owns a lumber yard drove up the street with a back hoe and cleared us out in ten mintues. Not that we could go anywhere though.

I remember our employers charging personal days and vacation against us even though PA declared a state of emergency and nobody but police, ambulance and rescue vehicles were allowed on the roads.

The EAGLES are going all the way this year. Remember you heard it here!

Weather Underground has us at 1 above right now, but they're also showing readings of 1 or 2 below just outside of town.

I think we're going to be closer to the center of the storm than Philadelphia is, too. On the Weather Channel they were saying something like 12-18 inches but they couldn't rule out 2 feet.

62. bit further north of north of Philly
Wilkes-Barre - Scranton area

first part of storm is predicted to dump 8-12 inches, followed another 3-5 inches... total prediction is 11-17

my neck/shoulder spasms say this sounds about right on the high end, but because this is a fairly "dry" snow storm with fluffy stuff as opposed to heavy wet snow -- we may end up with more

weather reports say we won't be above freezing until Tuesday. Currently it's -5 in my back yard (5:30am et Saturday) - windchill puts it lower than that

meanwhile -- from national weather alert ---
(I think the color code for this is WHITE :) )

LACKAWANNA PA-LUZERNE PA-PIKE PA-SOUTHERN WAYNE PA-SULLIVAN NY-
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BINGHAMTON NY CONTINUES THE WINTER STORM WARNING. SNOW WILL SPREAD ACROSS THE REGION ON LATE THIS MORNING AND EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. THE SNOW WILL FALL HEAVILY AT TIMES LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT...BEFORE GRADUALLY TAPERING OFF EARLY ON SUNDAY MORNING. STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 14 TO 20 INCHES ARE EXPECTED. NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 15 TO 25 MPH TONIGHT, PRODUCING AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW AND WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS. WIND CHILLS AROUND 10 BELOW ARE ALSO ANTICIPATED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS WINTER STORM. NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED AS HEAVY SNOW COMBINES WITH STRONG WINDS TO PRODUCE NEAR ZERO VISIBILITIES AND CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. ROADS WILL BE SNOW COVERED AND TREACHEROUS...AND TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.

There's about four inches or so right now. I'm clearing the driveway in stages (it's about 80 or so feet from the road to my garage door and the landlord doesn't do snow removal). I got the area around the back door clear, then from the front of my garage around John's (my boyfriend) car and halfway down the driveway. There's still about another 30 or so feet down to the road to do, and then the sidewalk, walkway and front steps. Guys on the second and third floors haven't been out yet.

45. Gosh, Auntie Bush, I hope you have those gloves with the
finger tips cut off! I'm embarrassed to say it's about 39 degrees (above zero) here in foggy northern California. I just got back from taking my kids out for Friday night pizza, and they were complaining about how cold it was! We are wimps out here for sure!! I grew up in New Jersey, though, so I did pay my dues weather-wise anyway!

Latest prediction is 8 to 12 starting midmorning tomorrow. High winds on Sunday as it pulls away.

Here in the beautiful Pocono Mtns. of NE PA. Snow is supposed to get here by Noon and start falling at the rate of an inch an hour throughout the afternoon. The latest projections for snowfall are at 8 to 10 inches but we'll probably get more than that. We're hunkering down.

55. Keep the updates coming - should get interesting next 18 hours
I must say, though, this seems to be the most anticipated snow storm in recent memory. Frankly, I enjoy the snow but we (Americans) sure make a big friggy deal about it. I'm sure you all don't need me to point out at that our "Severe Weather" as the local TV like to call it is nothing compared to the real natural disasters that have taken place recently on the other side of the globe.

Having said that it does appear places like NYC and Philly are going to get hit with some serious blizzard like winter weather but as long as no one does anything stupid like try to drive in it just because Walmart is open or ski naked down 5th Ave. then everyone should be fine come Sunday.

BTW, here in Pittsburgh, no snow yet but everything is cancelled already except my daughter's indoor soccer game tomorrow. I guess the field time is at premium so cancellations are rare. Probably the same deal with ice time for hockey.

I bet once ya get out into the country it's white out blizzard conditions and snow drift city baby. Keeps up like this and and all 4 ways in and out of this barely a town will be drifted shut by morning.

As long as the electricity stays on it's all good. But if it doesn't:-( brrrrrr, not good. Winds whipping around ice encrusted wires is a potentially bad combo. Currently our winds are gusting close to 50 mph and it's snowing sideways
:grouphug: Huddle together and stay warm.

One week, it's 65-70 degrees, the next week it drops by half. Man-made clouds for days on end, cold rain--then back to 65.

If the Dow Jones was swinging like this, investors would be in a panic. If your average AM/FM/TV transmitter had plate current readings that fluctuated the way the weather has been doing lately, it would be getting ready to blow.

SIDEBAR: Watch the jets in your area. Odds are, you've had way more "persistent contrails" than usual since the Supposed Election.

68. 8am Chicago time
and I'm in the western suburbs of Chicago. Hubby just finished clearing the driveway and he says we've had about 6 inches. It's stopped snowing and not very cold (OK, by Chicago standards)-- about 18 degrees.

It's funny about perspectives. We've had 6 inches and just deal with it. NC had an inch and Raleigh shut down. We'd use a broom for 1 inch. (not to minimize the situation in Raleigh -- just a comparison). Note: Hubby says the southern red states are wimps (his right-wing wacko brother lives there so it's personal!).

Off to make hot chocolate for the 2nd most wonderful man in my life (I'll always be daddy's girl).

Scubadude got stuck in Kansas City! He was due to land at Midway last night, but the airport shut down. Now I'm hoping they let his plane land sometime today. Last night was the perfect night for cuddling up too!

On the fun side, my pomeranian loves the snow! I just took her out and nearly lost her in the deep drifts. She loves to "graze" on the fresh snow. She has a game she tells me to play- I kick the snow at her and she leaps up and catches it in her mouth. What fun!

It was snowing heavy until a half hour ago and now it's clear and sunny. I'm 40 miles northwest of the city and I am seeing on the radar and hearing that it's still snowing in the city...this is a wierd snow pattern where it's coming almost directly from the north (as opposed to the west) and sweeping up extra moisture from Lake Michigan that's clobbering downtown and probably has burried NW Indiana. Otherwise, about 8 inches here...no biggie...streets are already plowed and life goes on.

Not from the west or northwest...and right down the lake...no wonder you're getting hammered. I grew up near Skokie and remember how we got clobbered in that famous '67 storm...where a couple miles to the west, there wasn't much snow at all.

Good luck and hope you're not suffering from cabin fever.

I'm near the zoo, in Huntington Woods, and I think it's still snowing, unless it's just the blowing snow. I'd say we have pretty close to a foot here, maybe 10". Our neighbors' visiting daughter and son-in-law did our walks and drive first things this morning and then again a couple of hours ago, I think. So sweet of them. My husband went out to do some and the neighbor told him to let his kids do it -- they're much younger and they enjoy it. Works for me! I'm just glad it's a Saturday, I had nowhere I had to go, so I stayed in my robe all day and watched all the inaugurination stuff I missed on Thursday when I was at work, including the protest rally a little while ago.

It's downright absurd. I remember the winter when it never melted between storms. We were all driving in tunnels. It's why we're so religious up here. When you have to proceed from a stop sign pass 10' piles of snow, you just pray there isn't a semi coming on the cross street!

That's nothing here in Chitown.

Nothing closes down here until there is at least 16" or more of the white stuff on the ground.

Chicago learned it's lesson in 1979. That was the year we got 89" of the stuff and Jane Byrne beat Mike Bilandic in the Dem mayoral primary because the streets never got plowed.

114. We're all snowed in now and hunkered down
for the weekend in Herkimer County, New York. I didn't have anything to add until today after it started about 1:00pm.

Nothing to do but lots of DVDs, Videos, and DU!

120. I got stuck out in it this afternoon...
When I left the house it was fine, but while I was at my son's music lesson the storm started. By the time I got out, the roads were sheer snow-covered ice. I think the plows/salt trucks were taken by surprise. I saw cars just spinning their wheels, totally unable to get up the hill. Traffic was bumper to bumper all through town.

I was in '77 too -- nothing can impress me after that!

125. about two feet here
It's morning here in northern MA, thank god it is a weekend. Last night I could just snuggle up with a hot chocholate and read a book. The wind sounded so weird sometimes however, like a tortured animal.

Looking out the window, I hope my mom doesn't wan't me to sweep off her care right off. It is literally covered with two feet of snow, if not more. It is like another car is piled on top of her car.

:)
