O'Reilly must be brought down

http://mediamatters.org/items/200501210003

Discussing the American Civil Liberties Union's (ACLU) objections to the Dover, Pennsylvania, school district's plans to include "intelligent design" theory in their high school biology curriculum, FOX News host Bill O'Reilly declared: "Hitler would be a card-carrying ACLU member. So would Stalin. Castro probably is. And so would Mao Zedong."

On the January 19 broadcast of The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly, O'Reilly read portions of the statement about "intelligent design," which the Dover Area School District requires its biology teachers to read, and complained that even this statement does not directly mention God:

O'REILLY: They won't even tell you in the statement what intelligent design entails. They won't mention a creator, a deity, a God. You know why? Because the ACLU then can haul them into court and cost them $100,000 to defend themselves. Fascism, fascism, fascism. Okay? Ah, drive me nuts! Hitler would be a card-carrying ACLU member. So would Stalin. Castro probably is. And so would Mao Zedong.

O'Reilly has previously labeled the ACLU a "fascist organization" and "the most dangerous organization in the United States of America right now ... second next to Al Qaeda."

1. Freedom of speech---just don't listen to him. Simple!
If his ratings tank he'll be gone.

Don't get yourself all worked up over something like this.

2. We can't "send him home"
the bush whores lap that crap right up. Same goes for Rush, how much audience did he lose over his drug flap?

5. But his ratings haven't gone down-he's got the top-rated cable news show
By contrast, on some nights Keith Olbermann's ratings average one-fourth to one-eighth of what O'Lielly gets (250K to 500K range as opposed to O'Lielly's 1.5M-2M). Fox News is the single most watched cable news network. Sometimes they get more viewers than CNN & MSNBC do combined.

I agree he needs to get gone but I wish that Faux would vanish too. Interestingly, O'Lielly's ratings went UP following the news that he was involved in a sexual harassment suit. People wanted to tune in to see what he'd say about it or if his big giant head would explode at the news.

And remember, his viewers are brainwashed freepers who can't think freely for themselves and don't see him or Rush as the hypocrites that they are--that's why they vote the way that they do.

8. Still low
compared to network News. They pull in 6-8M viewers a night. O'Rilley preaches to the base. His grating style turns off lots of moderates.

13. The ratings are misleading due to the way they are done
They are figured by viewers per half hour. CNN has more individual viewers while Fox's viewers tend to watch it longer, skewing the results.
All this says to me is that Fox addicts don't have a life besides the tube.

10. What I wonder about is
why aren't progressive successfully competing in the "marketplace of ideas". It's not enough to say it's because the media is corporate controlled. These mercenary suckers would sell their grannies into white slavery if they made a profit. If people were watching liberal shows when they had a choice, they would be broadcast all over the place.

So what exactly is our problem?? Are we all boring sticks of wood like Al Gore? Are we just unable to find our voice like John Kerry? What is the problem?

I don't pretend to have the answer, but I sure would like to see it discussed. The only way, IMO, to reverse the recent electoral disasters of the Democratic Party is to closely examine our message, our tactics, our strategy, and make the necessary corrections, however painful they may be.

24. I am
an economically minded Demmocrat. However, I am not necessarily agianst other issues, I just think that we spend to much time feeling sorry for ourselves, and not enough figuring out how to win elctions.

I am also somewhat pessimistic by nature, so that may partially account for some of what you don't like about my posts.

3. usually a good sex scandle works-but for Rielly-his ratings have increased
--so I hear. Maybe that is a function of the types of people who listen to him. I listen occassionaly just to see what the goon says.

15. Factor Ratings Have Not Increased !

The factor averaged a 2.7 for october of 2004, a 2.7 for november of 2004, and a 2.8 for december of 2004. Last week he averaged about 2,800,000 viewers a night. So his ratings are not increasing, they stay about the same, between 2.5 and 3.0 million viewers a night. And 91% of those viewers are Republicans, 3% are Democrats, and 6% are Independents.

So basically O'Reilly is preaching to the choir.

4. Oreilly is Faux equivalent to George W. Bush
Exceedingly arrogant, out-of-touch, knows he right about everything - reminds me of someone in the current White House.

6. Someone needs to bring him
A falafel and one of his favorite toys on the air. Just ambush him like Jon Stewart did on Crossfire. That might shut him up, or at least embarrass him.

16. Has O'Reilly gone face to face with Stewart?
Because that's what needs to happen.

I'm sure Splotchyface is too much of a coward to debate Stewart.

Oh, man, that would be so so great. And we thought seeing Carlson eaten alive was fun!!!

Man! I'd bring popcorn for all of DU if JS would do it.

26. I Thought He Was Done-for, But Dems Like BOIES Go on His Circus
giving him new life. I hadn't tuned in the O'LIELLY circus since his scandal broke, on the grounds that he was no longer a threat, that nobody would give any weight to what he said anymore. But last week, flipping channels, there was DAVID BOIES with O'LIELLY smiling away, like gloating about getting a Dem "name" to squirm. And true to form, our Dem dude was HESITANT, TIMID, and TEPID------like our Lefty column-writers are, who don't have the MEDIA PRESENCE to batter back at wingnut bullies on cable. So there was BOIES being KIND, and NOBLE, and CAREFUL WITH HIS WORDS, while O'LIELLY was LAUGHING at him. I thought we were rid of O'LIELLY, but I guess we Dems will give him our bleeding hearts to eat.
