AP News- Bush's 'Horns' salute shocked Norway, was seen as Satanic Salute
Norway is either the land of tinfoil hatters, or people at DU were right to claim that Bush's hand gesture was a salute to Satan. Here is a AP story about how the 'horns' were seen in Norway.

Associated Press
OSLO, Norway Jan 21, 2005 — President Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.

"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.

For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.

Texans please tell me. Is this the proper salute? I seem to remember it a little differently.

4. Remember "Hail Satan" by Richard Ramirez,
the "Night Stalker" ?

He yelled it plain as day when he was found guilty, then his lawyer tried to minimize it by claiming he'd said something else.

"Aw, no...heh heh...what Richie said was "Hail SATIN" -- ya see, he likes his orange jump suit so much, heh heh heh."

Now the spin is for the shrub's hand gestures to represent cattle, which he has none of

instead of the Devil,
which he is full of.

5. while i agree
Satan himself has put a fine touch on the demon that is the shrub, i must point to the Texas board and say that symbol has been that of the long horns far longer then the lord of darkness, none the less was it an opportune time to encourage a college football team?? i think not

6. Bush has no right to flash a "Hook 'em, Horns!"
He didn't even bother to go to Jenna's UT graduation ceremony because he knew there would be more boos than cheers in Austin.

I take it folks in Norway and other "shocked" countries didn't watch the Rose Bowl this year.

24. I'm Italian-American, and I had a pendant with that hand symbol on it
It was supposed to ward off the evil eye. This is also not something bush would want to be communicating to these people; it would imply that he thinks someone is giving him the evil eye.

10. Bush is no Longhorn.
He's no Texan, either, but being a Longhorn and being a Texan are not necessarily the same thing.

Of course he technically has the right but I guarantee you, there are plenty of Longhorn fans who were just as offended seeing him do that as anyone from Norway, including me!

16. Are you saying this "salute"
signifies a bull's horns and is only an inncoent Texas thing? So why did Bill Clinton give the same sign in the 1990's? It is some sort of a secret society thing and I want to know what the heck it is.

23. That's exactly what that sign symbolizes to a lot of people.
Anyone outside of the UT environment would see it as such. The gesture is common at concerts, particularly metal shows. And heavy metal, particularly death metal, is big in Norway. Bush makes an ass of himself yet again.
