Will you do something nice for John Conyers?
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 06:02 PM by proudbluestater
The Detroit News is having it's annual Michiganian of the Year nominating period. Would you all be so kind as to nominate our great friend, John Conyers, Jr. for this honor? There are a fair number of people picked each year, and the awards come out in a special section of the paper. John continues to work towards free and fair elections, even now.

Here is the email address: features@detnews.com

Please note, neither Detroit paper bothered to cover the good work John has done in conjunction with the Tin Foil Hat Brigade concerning election fraud. It would be a good chance to give the News a piece of your mind for their lack of coverage. Remember, the Detroit papers DID manage to print a story about John's alleged failure to distribute free turkeys to the underpriveleged, but couldn't be bothered to cover a stolen election. (I think the turkey story was false, or some mix up occurred.)

Here's some more info about John Conyers, Jr. from his bio page.

Having entered the House of Representatives in 1964, Mr. Conyers is the second most senior member in the House of Representatives and was elected by his congressional colleagues to lead the Democratic side of the pivotal House Committee on the Judiciary. In addition to its oversight of the Department of Justice (including the FBI) and the Federal Courts, the Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over copyright, constitutional, consumer protection, and civil rights issues. Congressman Conyers was also a member of the Judiciary Committee in its 1974 hearings on the Watergate impeachment scandal and played a prominent role in the recent impeachment process, giving him the distinction as the only Judiciary Committee Member to have served on both panels.

Congressman Conyers is also one of the 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and is considered the Dean of that group. Formed in 1969, the CBC was founded to strengthen African-American law makers ability to address the legislative concerns of Black and minority citizens.

In Mr. Conyers' 35 years in Congress, some of his major accomplishments include: the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, the Motor Voter Bill of 1993, the Martin Luther King Holiday Act of 1983, the Alcohol Warning Label Act of 1988, the Jazz Preservation Act of 1987, and was the driving force behind the Help America Vote Act of 2002.

Can you guys keep this kicked?? Thanks for any assistance!

4. I posted this several weeks ago
and nominated him. I also know I got several other DUers to do it, even if they didn't live in Michigan.

Thanks for posting again -- the more nominations he gets, maybe the greater chance he will be selected. Did you also post it in the Michigan forum? I posted mine there earlier in the month.

I agree that both papers totally ignored his brave stand in Ohio. I was pretty upset about it.

12. LOL Sharon! I had a vague recollection of seeing something
about the Michiganian of the year, but thought it must have been from seeing it in the newspaper which I buy occasionally! DUH! Saw it HERE!

I went through the archives of both those papers today and found 4 articles and/or editorials about Conyers and the election; only one was favorable. Most of them came out AFTER the challenge before Congress, when they could no longer ignore the issue.

Even without the election issue, he has a great record defending civil rights for all Americans.

I will post it in the Michigan forum, too. Thanks for the reminder!
