The current Repug response to the war: *&^% the soldiers. |
|
I couldn't believe it. A Repug acquaintance of mine was busy making excuses about the war when she said "They knew what they were getting into. They knew they might get killed. If they didn't want to go to Iraq they shouldn't have enlisted."
Sad. Disgraceful. I turned around and quit talking with her.
But this is their mindset now. Our soldiers? *&^% em.

many americans think that since the military is voluntary, soldiers can be treated like canon fodder.

2. Then why is the military still Republican? |
|
If soldiers realized they would be this mistreated by their own party, why would they rush to vote for Bush?

3. I think it's gonna change, real soon. |

Even in the Gulf War, the info getting to the soldiers was strongly controlled. Now, with cell phones and instant messaging and e-mail, they are hearing about it every time some pro-war asshat says fuck the troops.
There were a few, a very few, who attacked the troops in Vietnam, calling them baby-killers, though the right would have us believe the whole of the anti-war and left carried on like that. We were then much like we are now, furious at the administration and wanting the soldiers to come home. The real baby killers were sitting behind desks in Washington.
This time, the troops are hearing the truth for themselves.

volunteered proir to 911....during Clinton's term (remember peace and getting college paid for)...the last thing they expected was to be sent to a sandy land to fight terra.

It's just plain stupid for someone to think that "They knew what they were getting into". I never thought that the US would ever have a real ground war before 9/11 (unless some country actually invaded us). I'm sure most of them just wanted money for college and/or enjoyed the challenges.

6. "One weekend a month, my ass" |

Remember that sign nearly 2 years ago from Iraq? I'm sure few enlistees in the reserves or Nat'l Guard (and probably in the regular army/military) imagined they'd be involved in the current quagmire. I have no idea how many of the troops in Iraq enlisted after the initial invasion...but I'd bet it's a small percentage.

8. They never knew they were getting into one big war crime. |
|
They never knew their commander in chief would lie about WMDs. They made the mistake of trusting the CIC and the CIC let them down.
