What happens to a soldier who joins now?

What happens to a soldier who joins now?
Will they have to stay in the army untill the conflict is over? What if we're still in Iraq in 20 years? Does "stop loss" mean you can never leave the army?

U sign up for 4 years active and 4 years inactive reserve. You could serve up to eight years active.

2. read the fine print
you could very well stay until the confict is over, whatever that means. don't remember the exact wording, but it basically says "or as long as we need you, son."
