We better start opposing sanctions right now.
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 09:54 AM by Skinner
They intend to invade and occupy Iran. They are not part of the reality based community. We better start opposing sanctions right now. We've seen how sanctions can be used as the first step to war.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2005/01/23/international1855EST0521.DTL President Bush said Monday his administration won't exclude the possibility of using military force against Iran over its nuclear program, which the United States believes is aimed at producing weapons. Vice President Dick Cheney also said Thursday that Iran "is right at the top of the list" of world trouble spots.

Iran has denied allegations of a secret nuclear weapons programs, saying its nuclear activities are for peaceful energy purposes.

Secretary of State nominee Condoleezza Rice made clear during her confirmation hearings last week that American differences with Iran go well beyond its nuclear program, saying it was "really hard to find common ground with a government that thinks Israel should be extinguished."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi responded Sunday, saying Iran "has always said that Tel Aviv decides U.S. policies and that the Zionist lobby is very powerful in the United States."

Asefi said top U.S. administration officials found no international support when they suggested that the United States may be considering military action against Iran.

1. The people most hurt by sanctions would be Halliburton
They are currently getting around the industrial sanctions imposed by the US (but obviously not enforced very efficiently). Other countries have not imposed sanctions - and China will block any UN sanctions. If the US imposed sanctions and meant it, it would hurt Cheney's bank balance first.

3. Iran has the fourth largest oil reserves in the World.
Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 08:40 PM by norml
Taking Iran's oil off the world market would raise the price of oil, in much the same way as taking Iraq's oil off the world market has raised the price of oil. This has raised the value of all oil holdings by trillions of dollars, and has raised the value of the oil services companies. Under Dubya and Dick, Halliburton will get around the sanctions, and they will get the contracts no matter what. Cheney will be more than happy to help himself, and his friends, game the market.

4. China would veto any sanctions in the Security Council
and continue buying Iranian oil - and if they did, so would most other countries. Without the Security Council OKing sanctions, the US would have to threaten other countries' tankers to have any effect. I don't think they would dare do that.

8. And then Dubya would denounce the UN for doing nothing about WMDs
, and go it alone.

5. And who can forget Cheney's Halliburton
breaking sanctions with Iraq and I think Libya(?). Cheney gave speeches when he was CEO of Halliburton where he criticized the governments policy of sanctions (as it restricted business).

7. It's hard to tell on this since some of the paragraphs are one sentence
long, and I wasn't sure if they qualified as paragraphs.
