Postmortem on the Bush Speech...slide stalled? |
|
Im wondering if Bushes "Stay the Course" speech did the trick to stall the slide in his poll numbers and maybe stilled the criticsm a bit that the Iraq situation has engendered.
I know we all are pretty much partisan Democrats here (and fairly left ones to boot), but looking at this from maybe a more apolitical or middle-of-the-road perspective maybe this speech (and the surrounding media blitz) will do the trick for Bush.
Recall this guy has been underestimated in the past (ask Anne Richards).

1. I'd be surprised if it stopped the slide. |
|
He's causing bellyaching in freeperville. I think Repubs are going to wonder why, when the GOP controls every branch of the federal govt, it's not getting smaller and less in your face. I think Bush is out of touch with his own rank and file. And it's catching up with him everytime he opens his mouth.

2. As you say, he should not be underestimated |
|
But it appears to me Bush asking for the $87 billion opened a can of worms. There's now talk from Repukes and Dems of repealing part of the tax cut in order to pay for this. What an embarrassment for Bush.

5. yeah, but this has to be approached w. some skill |
|
I think what we heard, if we listened close, was an admission of policy failure last night...going back to the UN, and going to ask for $$$ to help from overseas...pretty much a contradiction to that big blustery unilateralist policy....
...yet a second failure on this front can be spun to play to US xenophobia and "us against the world" sentiment thats out there.

3. People keep saying that thing about underestimating "This President" |
|
but you know, at some point, people figure out what it is they've got, and it isn't underestimating after a certain point. You think that if he performs in the upcoming presidential debates like he has in any of his "press conferences" over the past few years, he'll get the benefit of "reduced expectations" again? I can't see it, if for no other reason that people expect some growth in their leaders.
And, as someone pointed out in another thread, this clown seems to be on the verge of mental collapse. I think it is clear that he is in way ove rhis head, and the "adults" who were suposed to make things run smooth, have failed miserably.

7. As have too many Democratic politicos. |
|
For example, Biden, in his comments on Dubya's speech.

but it's obvious the media is increasingly out of touch with the populace.

|
The only people it 'convinced' were the mouth-breathing freepers who think Bush is the 2nd coming...
