I was stuck in traffic this morning behind some dimwit with ribbons plastered all over the back of his car, one of which said "freedom isn't free!"
Of course I've seen this slogan over and over in the last couple of years, but this morning it struck me just how stupid it is. This is the catchy little phrase the Bushbots have embraced to sum up their entire support of the Iraq war, but actually, freedom IS free! It's the LACK of oppression -- not something you buy at a convenience store. The idea that freedom isn't something natural, but something that you have to save up and PURCHASE is twisted. MAN!
I'm sure "freedom isn't free" is exactly what slaveholders told their slaves. You have to buy your freedom, boy!
Just had to rant.

2. I'm so sick of seeing crap like that. |
|
I feel like making up my own bumper sticker but I have a pretty certain feeling my car would get the crap keyed out of it here in Red Missouri. Whats the deal with these stickers, does buying a 3 dollar God Bless America ribbon make them feel like a better person? I say make those ribbons cost 100 or 1000 then maybe I would be a bit more impressed otherwise its just cheap back patting.

3. I think the meaning of that phrase is more along the lines of: |
|
"Sometimes you have to fight to protect or preserve freedom"
I wish someone could tell me how, exactly, the Iraq war is 'preserving or protecting' anyone's freedom.
More jingoism from the administration that brought you "They hate us for our freedoms." :eyes:

5. Yeah -- I would agree that fighting is sometimes necessary to |
|
preserve/attain freedoms. If you're locked in a cage, you need to fight to get out! But, well, duh.
And "freedom isn't free" isn't saying that at all, anyway. Argh.

7. Then why did we try to "give it" to the Iraqis? |
|
If it isn't free... shouldn't they have fought for their own?
The right lives on slogans these days. It's alot of contradictory bullshit.

8. We say that all the time around here, but it's usually followed by |
|
"No, there's a hefty fuckin' fee..."
(Team America: World Police soundtrack, for those who aren't familiar with it.)

Without union guys getting their heads broken in, people of conscience fighting to achieve racial equality and a minimum wage, patriotic Americans protesting against filthy wars of aggression, like Vietnam and Iraq, there would be no freedom in this country.
It goes both ways.
US soldiers haven't fought "for freedom" since at least Korea, BTW.

|
who will?"
Sorry, now you've got me singing that damned song.
I know many people didn't find Team America World Police funny, but I'll have to say I laughed my ass off. And bought my husband the sound track.

13. I agree Freedom isn't Free |
|
But let Iraqi boys and girls pay the price for their freedom if they want it.
America should not be footing the bill with our dead children for freedom for the rest of the world.
