Fury at farmer who 'threw worker to lions'
Telegraph
By David Blair in Phalaborwa
(Filed: 25/01/2005)

A packed courtroom echoed to the chants of furious South African demonstrators yesterday as a white farmer went on trial, accused of murdering a black worker by feeding him to a pride of lions.

Mark Scott-Crossley, 37, pleaded not guilty to all charges, drawing hostile glares from the public benches on the opening day of the most racially charged court case in South Africa's recent history.

He is accused of assaulting a former worker, Nelson Chisale, 41, before throwing him, bound and bleeding, into an enclosure filled with lions.

All that remained was Mr Chisale's skull, ribs, vertebrae and a single finger. Each had been gnawed and scored with the tooth marks of lions.
