1. Conratulations!
Question: Why no African Americans in such an African American-based tradition as the Jazz Funeral March? Didn't they want to participate?

4. Uhm..did you even view the gallery?
I will say that there weren't as many african american participants as I would have hoped, I KNOW the ministers and several african american civic associations encouraged attendance. Unfortunately it was a work day! Many couldnt get the day off.

On the basic question, I have to agree though. Where were the African Americans? They hold a majority of around 78% in NOLA, wish we could have had them there since the vast majority support this action.

Also, you may need to look a little closer. I saw quite a few African American Participants. One of the speakers was from the New Orleans Greater Coalition of Ministers, Rev. Randall Mitchell and a great speaker (sorry that I don't have his name) from the Black Panthers. When the demonstration convened at the ampitheater, a wonderful poem was read by african-american poet, Meridel Lewis'. Her poem can be located at:

11. OK..I'll look again...maybe I was too hasty...
I just thought that with the event being a Jazz Funeral, the black turnout would have been enormous.(Wishful thinking, perhaps?)

But, still, that doesn't take away from the success of the day and the project and I am very proud of all that you accomplished for all of us.

I am not by any means criticizing your efforts, I am sure that the outreach was sincerely made..I was just asking out of curiosity. :)

13. There were blacks, but it was a Thursday and many were
working. It is difficult to take a weekday off when you work and try to support a family. But they were along the route, nodding and giving us signs of approval.

2. Wow! Nobody responds to a "pics" post
I always do, but maybe that's because I'm so visual. Take a break, relax and watch this slideshow! It's really unlike anything else that happened on "Inaugurations" Day. EVER.

8. Hi funkybutt!
We may meet during Mardi Gras. You will immediately recognize me and hear me coming a mile away... if you're on Frenchmen during Fat Tuesday. :D

12. Will be there. Hope to bring more from NW FL this time.
Have posters made to put up at the end of the month.

Son and I did not tell anyone we were going. Thought that in this red sea, no one would be interested. (And I did not want to hear "Enemy of the State," I wanted to leave on a high note.)

My neighbor, a lefty like me from the 60's, told everyone at the village market where we had gone.

I get back, and now, I have people who have not spoken to me in over a year coming up and asking about the Jazz Funeral, and not in a dismissive way. They are now interested. So I played up the white arm band, social security, the patriot act.

Seems there is hope for a discussion and consensus here in Freeperville.

The tide is turning.

14. Great!
We'd really like this to develop into a regional center for Progressive Activities. You and your fellow Floridians' participation is greatly appreciated!
