"Young Conservatives of Texas" embarass themselves again
The Young Conseravtives of Texas, the major conservative student organization in Texas made fools out of themselves today on the University of Texas campus.

The group set up a table in the West Mall area of campus to express their opposition to affirmative action programs (evidently having lost in the Supreme Court they won't just "get over it"). That's fine, but they chose to use shock value tactics that bordered on outright racism. They held an "Affirmative Action Bake Sale" with a sign selling brownies and cookies at different prices to people of different races: that is, cookies were 50 cents for blacks and Hispanics, 75 cents for Asians and Indians and $1 for whites. This ploy attracted many angry people who came to argue with the Conservatives. In fact, they had to deal with a large crowd of detractors for several hours.

The UT Daily Texan will have a story on this incident in tomorrow's paper, which I will link here early tomorrow morning.

Frankly, when I think about how many of these folks are running loose in CS, but as I have had them or others like them in my classes, I am not surprised that they live at TAMU.:eyes:

13. They're Aggies
And while there are some good Aggies out there (John Sharp, etc.), by and large it's a right wing haven.

Hook em' Horns!

22. Young conservative fascists
How dare they appropriate the logo of MY university for their own repulsive purposes. Nazi jerks.

On a related subject, I noticed a lot of white skin in that group photo, but not much else, though I see the one African-American has been given prominent display.

7. What I want to know is
what if they couldn't tell what race someone is? I mean, sometimes it is not obvious. Is there an "other" baked good price? I am Hispanic, but most people don't know that unless I tell them. Most people just assume I'm white. If they want to accurately portray the way things are, they should give the baked goods away for free to all the wealthy, white males who come from prominent families. I am so sick of all these people crying foul about affirmative action. It would not exist if people were truly equal.

14. lets not forget the blond hair blue eyed spanish speakers
of which there are many.

And what of mixed races? Does one drop of "mud" blood keep them from paying the "white" price?

12. Indeed
I'm pretty sure their goal was to attract attention and piss liberals off. If they get media coverage thats a victory for them.

20. The Daily Texan could not have resisted
Trust me, they're up right now, on FIRE pounding away at this earthshattering scoop. I know, I've been there: 1988 - 90.

Tomorrow's headline should read "Young Conservatives of Texas succeed, again, at spawning knee-jerk freakout with petty formulaic goading."

Gazing into my crystal ball here: There will be... NO disciplinary action! There will be... NO students expelled! There will be... MANY indignant editorial columns calling for same nonetheless! There will be... a freerepublic award! There will be... A Limbaugh mention!

Ugh. Seen it so many times it fails to captivate, like what happens to EMTs the fiftieth time they ride on a code blue while holding some guy's brain inside his skull. Guess that's why it's college.

24. Should there be disciplinary action in this case?
Should students be expelled? Not sure what harm was done, just another form of protest.

19. Ha! Reminds me of A&M
Does the 'preacher' Tom Short still rant and rave there?

He was the most exciting wingnut to visit the campus. A total loon.

Glad to see UT gets to experience some Young Conservative hate.
There's certainly plenty to go around.

21. the most effective response
to this silly little paint-by-numbers exercise by the YCT would have been for some white person to go up to the bake sale table and purchase something like half of their stock, then randomly hand these out to every three out of ten white people in the audience, for free, to represent the inherited advantage of upper-middle and upper-class whites.

23. No story, but a letter to the editor
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 02:32 AM by bluestateguy
I guess the "reporter" didn't meet his deadline. But there is a letter to the editor in support for the bake sale. I just want to show that I did not make this up.
