When you check in to vote, you receive a card which looks a lot like your debit card which was programmed for your ballot. When you step up to the Touchscreen, you insert the card to receive the ballot which was programmed into it.
The touchscreen will not work without a smart card being inserted (to wake it up) and when you select "Cast Ballot" the card is ejected and you return it to the pollworker.
This is the item talked about in the Hopkins report as the $100.00 piece of equipment a teenager could buy and create voter cards to cast multiple votes in a garage.

3. Well, the "review" part didn't work for me! |
|
Not only no paper ballot, but no review screen for me, just a blank.
And what's with returning the card to the official?

We have them here, too. You have a paper ballot and fill in the circles with a pen, like a standardized test (or "Scan Tron" sheet), then you feed the ballot into the optical scan machine, which counts the vote and stores the paper ballot. The key here is the paper ballot.

6. When I went to "Contact Us"... |
|
I was transfered to my local city and county clerks offices.
I asked the following questions:
1. Will these, or similar machines, be used in my district?
2. If so, will there be a "hard copy" of the ballot to place in a sealed ballot box for verification purposes?
3. How can the community be assured that the votes are counted correctly, if no "hard copy" is provided?
4. What are the procedures that are used to verify the votes, and will the public be informed of those ptrocesses, and be able to investigate contested votes/results?
I went on to say, most people will appreciate the ease of use, but will be dubious as to the actual and honest counting of the ballots.
Let's see if I get answer!

9. Isn't that special ???Hmmmmm? |

I downloaded the files from the Jim Marsh site this weekend...all but one that I still need to get. One of the files contains the instruction manuel for the GEMS vote counting machine. This machine also is used to program what you are seeing on the touch screen machine. This manuel is 632 pages.....that's right 632 pages of techno crap. No average or even above average local election official would ever be able to manage this, which means that Diebold needs to furnish an employee with the expertise to operate this machine and the GEMS unit is the do all and be all of the election. So easy at this point to do vote rigging. I feel they have made this unit more technical than needed because it gives them another area of control over the election. (Note "Sophia" in the SLO election control room). Georgia is preparing a training course for local election officers on the GEMS. The full schedule of training takes 60 days.....yep 60 days to learn the operation of this piece of crap. Will the folks in charge submit to this or will it just be easier to "hire" one of Diebolds techs to handle it ????

The damn window won't close!
I think the new method is going to cause a lot of confusion at the polls.
