Excellent video of Cognitive Dissonance from Truthout.
Click on first show - "Chris Hume "Red State Road Trip" Day Two -- 01.21.05" - it's only a couple of minutes.

I don't really appreciate the "Red State" title, because I'm sure the filmmakers could have found poor people and children in blue states (say Santorum's district or Denver) that would have answered the same way. However, it is simply amazing how so many people just don't think anymore! If only they could hear and see themselves on tape!

1. The trouble with that argument
Or the conservative response to it (I should say), is that Liberals would respond with something about how we Liberals don't trust the American people and think we know best all the time and that gies us the right to tell them what to do.

2. Did you watch the video?
I didn't say I or Liberals know what is best for anyone! The video asks simple questions and when they answered they gave answers that would indicate they don't support Bush policies. That is the problem.

4. Then I don't understand your first post.
The trouble with what argument? The video (actually both) clearly show people who when asked said they voted for Bush, or would have if they had voted. Then asked what their priorities were they answered "environment" "jobs" "economy." They clearly know things are going badly in those areas, yet they voted for the guy who is not addressing those problems. Isn't that what cognitive dissonance is? Maybe I used the wrong terminology.

6. I'm not saying I disagree with yout point
I'm just saying that when you and I talk about cognative dissonence, conservative commentators, trying to play on natural prejudices, will say "Hey small red town inhabitants, Liberals think you are too dumb to vote for people who really represent your interests."

8. And all it takes is for Dems to counter that bull.
It would simply take liberals running for office to actually visit these areas and explain what they stand for and how they would work on these issues.

Kerry ignored these areas at his own peril.

17. Or have any liberal who isn't
too afraid of sounding liberal to defend his/her views. Democrats allow this sort of thing when we're too chicken to stand up for what we believe in and try to sound moderate in an appeal to swing voters.

But if you don't mind I'll hold off on the crying. As gratifying as I'm sure you'd find it.

5. very powerful stuff
I'm from Charlottesville, VA -- this is my backyard.

I gotta tell you, it's like this all over the state. C-ville is lucky -- college town, lots of local business and local color (over 70% voted for Kerry) but step outside the town and it's virtually indistinguishable from Martinsville.

These people AREN'T republicans...they just have been made to believe they are.

7. Yes!
That is the point. They clearly aren't Republicans! They are being severely hurt by Republican policies, yet they can't see that by continuing to vote for them they are hurting themselves! Watch the first of the series...the guy voted for Bush, likes him...yet he said he is for Universal Health Care! AArrggghh!

11. True, but it would also help if they weren't ignored.
When Democrats write off entire sections of the country and never campaign there, why would they believe the people there would vote for them?

16. i totally agree
dems spent the last 10 years being the "not the GOP" party.

it's time we expressed coherently our own ideas. clearly we haven't done that.
