Pics of USS Sanfranciso released
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 04:00 PM by Stella_Artois
The sub that the Navy says hit an undersea mount at full speed, causing the death of one crewmember

Could be a write-off, certainly the damage will be in the hundreds of millions. Lucky there was only one dead.

1. Yikes!
Subs freak me out. I used to see them from time to time in SF bay. Something about them give me the creeps.

Amazing vessels, but :scared:

2. HOLY SHIT!!
I had no idea the damage was that bad. They had to be going 20+ knots. The whole side is front side is caved in and ripped.

4. I can't beleive that didn't breach the pressure hull.
So, when they say "20 knots plus" they mean, what, 45? and when they say 1000 feet, they mean, what, 5,000?

6. The top secret sonar equipment is under the tarp
according to my submariner friend. Or, at least what's left of it.
He was surprised they were able to make it to the surface.

13. I'd say that probably could be worth not hiding under a tarp.
its not very good sonar if you can run into a flipping mountain right?

Scary, my close friend's son is stationed on a sub. I have so much respect for anyone that can do that.

14. you think so??
"its not very good sonar if you can run into a flipping mountain right?"

What sound does a mountain make that would allow you to hear it an know it's there? Or do you think the sub is pinging away with an active sonar?

16. They run without sonar and hope not to hit anything.
Sonar gives away your position. They navigate by calculating position, depth, speed, time, etc.

8. The catwalk bulges upward 10 feet behind the damage
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 04:35 PM by patcox2
Is that a deformation caused by the collision, or is that front of that sub normally bulbous?

The damage seems worst on the port side topsides, you'd think a grounding would affect the bottom worst, would this mean the boat was in a tight turn when it hit, an avoiding-type manouevre?

Or did it really hit another sub?

:wow: I'm surprised the damn thing kept afloat, what the hell did they run into out there?

:tinfoilhat: makes you wonder if the San Francisco had a run in with somebody's naval veseel, or something..the "old navigation charts" tale doesn't fly anymore...

11. man...
that ship in the background of the first picture is like the one I used to be on...but they sunk it off the coast of VA...

Most ships can stay afloat with damage like that...you simply seal off the areas that were damaged by closing the water tight doors. Most ships have water tight doors that can seal off entire sections fo the ship that are damaged in case of this type of thing.

17. My odd thought about this accident
I remember years ago someone testifying before Congress that the entire Federal budget for the arts cost about as much as the first fifteen feet of a nuclear sub.

There goes the arts budget!
