How Fraudulant Will The Election Be? Fallujahns to Vote At US Base!

Isn't there some US Military code that prohibits the US Military's involvement in another country's election. They also have been handing out posters and ballots and helping elections officials all over Iraq. I know the UN is pissed about it.

FALLUJAH, Iraq, Jan. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Insurgents detonated two voting centers near the flashpoint Iraqi city of Fallujah on late Wednesday, 12 hours after they were opened, witnesses said Thursday.

"US troops opened two voting centers in Ameriyat al-Fallujah, some 7 km southwest of Fallujah. The two centers were nothing but two shops which were detonated 12 hours after being opened," the witnesses told Xinhua.

Moreover, US tanks called on Fallujah residents through loudspeakers to go to the US base on Sunday to vote after it seems impossible to open election centers in the city, according to the witnesses.

1. Its actually a rather good idea

Since any voting center outside of a US military installation is nothing but a target waiting to get hit, if they're going to try and hold elections at all in areas like Falluja, I think this is probably the only way they can do it.

Of course, this is going to invite obvious parallels to Saddam's "elections." There is nothing quite so democratic as being marched onto a military base and asked to cast your ballot under the watchful eye of soldiers armed with ak47s who are occupying your land.

Bottom line is that while I agree in principle with the idea of voting booths inside the base, as a practical matter it will be just another reason why this election is going to be considered illegitimate by a great many people.

I just added to my OP. The US is involved in many areas in this election. Like all of them!

The other thing is, doesn't this base just make another huge target for the resistance? I don't think it is a real solution at all.

4. Yeah but the real solution is to take a time machine

and stop Bush from invading in the first place--given conditions as they are now, this is probably the best place to have it in those areas--yeah it will be dangerous, but at least they can prepare for the danger better. And any where else would be even more dangerous.

5. What would your solution be?

I'm trying to be pragmatic about it. I mean, for god's sake, the two polling places got blown apart within twelve hours of opening. The order has come down to our troops that they've got to try and help the people who want to particpate in the elections. They've got two options as I see it: Either put the polling place inside a local military base -- which is pretty much the only location in the country we can reliably defend -- or we can simply tell them to open up polling places inside town, and then do our best to prevent problems. Either way, our troops are going to be big targets come election day. At least if its held on a military base, there's a reasonable chance that both our troops and the civilian voters will be able to make it through the day alive.

These elections are already shaping up to be a colossal disaster, and no matter what happens, a great many people are going to view them as illegitmate. As best I can see it, the only real goal in areas like Falluja is just to keep as many people alive as possible through election day.

WASHINGTON, Jan 28 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush says Iraqi leaders chosen in next week's election will probably want U.S. troops to stay, but the forces will be pulled out if the new government asks, The New York Times reported on Friday.

"I've heard the voices of the people that presumably will be in positions of responsibility after these elections, though you never know," Bush said in an interview with the newspaper. "But it seems that most of the leadership there understands that there will be a need for coalition troops at least until the Iraqis are able to fight."

the whole election IS illegitimate. Merely having the polls inside a military base, is far, far down the list of reasons for "considering" it so.

3. It is probably going to be as much a sham as ours was

Who doubts that we will make sure the one "we" want is elected? Anyone know what voting method will be used? Or what tabulation system? Accenture (major investor in Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia, and God knows what else) has been involved in overseeing elections for overseas military personnel and citizens as far back as 2000.

If anyone in their right mind thinks that someone,anyone will get into a high office position in Iraq and THEN want Americans out of their country,then their living in a dream world.

Watch,who ever the winners are will be soooooo thankfull and gratefull that they'll want the US to build a couple of military airbases as quickly as possible.

has her dead fathers passport bush says she is allowed to registered and vote in the Iraqi elections! Both she and 18 yr child (also born here) are voting in the Iraq elections...they don't even know anyone in Iraq yet they can vote tomorrow from CA???
