1. He's probably drunk.
He labors under the misconception that he does his best work in that state.

5. I'd be shocked if he wasn't
Hitch is one of those morans whose hatred of religion blinds him to anything else that's out there. So much so that he'll support any kind of blind imperialism there is, as long as it attacks religion.

He truly had something with his "Trial of Henry Kissinger" stuff, but now he's so schnockered half the time he doesn't know his head from his @$$.

2. How many sheets to the wind?
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 01:09 PM by tridim
Three is standard for Hitchens.. But I've seen him on TV pushing four.

Edit: Anyone know the origin of the phrase, "three sheets to the wind"?

Edit again: What would I do without Google?
Three Sheets to the Wind
The phrase dates to 1821. The sheet is a reference to a rope on a sailboat. To have a sheet loose in the wind is bad seamanship, to have three loose means you are not capable of controlling the boat. Occasionally you will see one sheet to the wind meaning half-drunk.

6. I saw him on Washington Journal this morning.
He seemed drunk to me. I can't get a fix on that guy. Sometimes he makes a good point but mostly he's totally off base. There was another guest who is a reporter from the Chicago Tribune. He was on his game. He probably had a double espresso instead of a whiskey for breakfast! Poor Christopher always looks like he needs a bath and freshly pressed clothes.

10. Heres how you understand him.
He is an extremely intelligent guy who can sometimes make very interesting points, but he is held back by his adherence to alot of myths, many of which he shares with neoconservative types, about the nature of the world.

13. Thanks for the explanation.
I read his articles in Vanity Fair, but, until recently I'd never seen him on TV. What a mess he is! He did write some excellent opinion articles on abortion and on quality of life issues in NYC.

14. "a handful"

"We're down at the old Hitchens place probably twice a month at least," said Sgt. Wilson Vernon, the first of three officers to arrive at the scene. "Once his blood's up, old Hitch can get meaner than a three-legged coon hound. From what the neighbors told us about this latest incident, Noreen was all worked up, accusing him of drinking and womanizing. He was angry with her refusal to acknowledge that there is ample evidence to make a case for prosecuting Henry Kissinger as a war criminal. She just kept shouting, 'No, there ain't!'"

(schnip)

Town officials in Sparta, where Hitchens has maintained an on-again, off-again residence for two decades, admit that he may be "a handful" at times, but they insist he is not a danger to himself or others.
(hic-schnip)

Added(Sparta Police Chief) Perkins: "So long as Hitch can learn to keep his mouth shut about Christianity being symptomatic of the 'savage and ignorant prehistory of our species' and whatnot, I'm sure he'll cause no trouble that a few cups of black coffee and a night in the drunk tank can't solve."

One of funniest Onion articles of ever. w/photo :

15. My disagreement with Hitchens' stance on Bush's --
-- Iraq assault does not lessen my respect for his range.

Dylan Thomas was a boozehound's boozehound but that fact doesn't lessen my awe of his work.

I have learned a lot from Hitchens and expect to learn more. Is he too conservative for me? Sure. But I respect a wide-ranger, and he is one.
