Virginia Military Inst. costumes: Nazis, KKK & the starving poor. Hahaha!
USA! USA!...I'm so proud!

For the 2004 Virginia Military Institute Halloween party, cadets dressed as Nazis, fairies, KKK, the starving poor and guys with bullseyes on their asses.

Photos posted on a public message board show VMI cadets dressed for their 2004 Halloween party as Nazis, fairies, a starving Ethiopian, the KKK and a man with a bullseye on his ass.

Similar pictures in the U.K. have recently caused an uproar. Will these in America? It's doubtful, but one should no less condemn VMI's ability to laugh at the deaths of millions, make light of famine and race and mock homosexuality. These are, after all, the men who are supposed to one day graduate to their own posts at Gitmos and Abu Ghraibs around the world.

To contact VMI with your thoughts, Contact Col. Susan H. Barr, VMI Chief Information officer. She has supervion over "training and investigations," which administers "civility" policies:

18. What is the Point of sending your kid to VMI???
I assumed that the ones that attended VMilitaryI, were those that were interested in military careers?

During one of Chris Mathews stops during his road shows to various colleges around the country soon after Bush declared war on Iraq, he held court at VMI. Whenever Chris asked the audience of cadets, what they thought of going to Iraq, they hooted and cheered as though it was a basketball game.....they just couldn't contain their excitement for battle. When Chris asked the question "how many of you agree with the President, that we must stop Iraq?", the entire audience raised their hands. He then asked "how many of you plan on entering the service, after you graduate?", approximately 5-6 raised their hands.

These kids, strut, parade, dress in cute little uniforms, playing soldier yet they never intended to serve their country within the military services......what is the point? Sounds like the Prep-school for entering the priveleged Country Club/Corporations.

This what young girls were fighting to get into???

19. I always think of VMI as military academy rejects
The Citadel as well. These are folks who did not enlist, and could not get into one of the military academies, but want the military education experience for some reason. Both institutions are actually leftovers from the confederacy, which explains a lot.

3. Here is a message board discussing the party if it helps
http://richmond.indymedia.org/feature/display/9193/index.php

Including these comments:

*Despite the fact that most cadets tend to be conservative at VMI there is no 'gay bashing.' Leave it to liberals to demand political correctness yet again! Before you cry wolf you might first stop to think of inter-service rivalries. If you had done this you would have realized that this is far from the first time the Navy has been made fun of by using gays.

*everything is turning into a problem in our great country. these guys are just tryin to have some fun and this liberal maniac is making a deal out of it. you boys keep it up and give those liberals something to cry about.

*Nazi's are mocked throughout Hollywood, so before you attempt to detroy and entire belief system on from three "party" pictues please picket your signs at Hollywood. On a further note, please live the life before you judge. I suppose that's a resounding theme behind the liberal ideal anyway.

*First... what you did is illegal. You stole pictures from a web site, do your homework. Second i bet you are a DAMN LIBERAl! There is a such thing as freedom of expression and just like a liberal to attack it. Third I bet at every halloween party there is a Hitler look a like. Go to ANY college campus, MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS

5. VMI students will investigate costume party
The Roanoke Times

"LEXINGTON - Virginia Military Institute will allow students to investigate a barracks Halloween party at which some cadets dressed as Nazis, drag queens and a starving African.

"By allowing the Corps to police itself under supervision by the administration, we believe cadets will more readily recognize the inappropriateness of this behavior and see the importance of correcting it," officials of the Lexington college said in a statement Friday. The Officer of the Guard Association, which investigates disciplinary problems, will report its findings to the cadet General Committee. That group will recommend disciplinary measures that must be approved by the administration.

VMI officials learned about the costumes when an Internet user alerted them to photos of the party posted on an online message board.

A cadet originally posted the pictures on a photo-sharing site, webshots.com, believing that access to them required a password, the VMI statement said. Someone else later posted them to a message board operated by the Richmond Independent Media Center. VMI officials said the cadet took down his pictures, but similar photos were still posted Friday evening on the Webshots site."

13. VERY- I think these were originally e-mailed to a local talk radio guy
Mac(k) Watson. This guy is a real idiot-I listen to him on the way home most days and he not only just spew RW talking points he does ZERO research and gets hoodwinked repeatedly. I could go on and on but it is like listening to a train wreck. I have called in a couple of times (easy to do he has few callers-very hard to follow line of "reasoning") the most memorable was when his fill in (REALLY RW) told me that I didn't know what I was talking about when I said that the coalition members paid for 90% of Gulf War 1-he hung up on me.

This is for real and all over the local news.

Well, at least we know the next crew at Abu Gahbril are being well trained.

6. From the article I posted
"VMI, a public college, admitted blacks in 1968 and women in 1997, but the school continues to be dominated by white men who are overwhelmingly Christian. Fewer than 10 percent of the students are women, and fewer than 20 percent are black. Only a handful are Jewish."

14. Yes it is a state school and there is no direct military linkage
about 38% (only 38%) of VMI grads actually join the military. It IS like an ROTC program but I am not sure if it excludes them from going to Officer Training School.

State funded.

15. Spoiled brats more like it
the single dumbest person I ever met in the military went to VMI after his time in the Army. I ran into him during the summer at VCU-I asked what he was doing there (I worked in the student commons) and he told me he was on academic probation at VMI and was taking classes at VCU to get his GPA up, for some reason he thought it would be easier. Truly a moron.

16. VMI is an hour down the road from me
This story was featured on our local news last night and couldn't help but laugh when they plastered the pic of the kid dressed as a drag queen. I'm sure it did his parents proud.

You may recall the court battle a few years ago when VMI was trying to stop women from enrolling in their all male college. Because they were using state funds, they had to stop discriminating and allow women in. I haven't been following the story so I'm not sure how well they have integrated into the school.

I've met several VMI alumni while living in Virginia and I must say they ALL grew up to be your typical rightwing weenie heads.

20. VMI is one of those creepy schools with secrets galore.
When in college in the early 80's, one of my friends dated a VMI cadet from Alabama (son of Sen Jeremiah Denton, the nutso exPOW/Senator that publically stated it is impossible for a husband to rape his wife, that he is entitled to what is his). She was going to the homecoming dance and made arrangements from me to have a date with one of her boyfriend's fellow cadets. The pomp and circumstance was so friggin stupid, but I figured boys will be boys. When at the football game, we silly Southern women did not bring coats and it was freezing, the cadets took off their wool overcoats and gave them to us. Though this was a very polite thing to do, the cadets were called on it, ordered to take back their coats and given demerits as they were out of uniform. A big deal was made of it in the stands.

Do you think as big a deal will be made of these costumes? I doubt it.

side note: I learned that my date was drummed out of VMI later that school year in a middle of the night ceremony complete with candle light and all of his fellow cadets turning their back on him. I wonder if he recognizes how lucky he was?
