Dahr Jamail LIVE from Iraq on 'This is Hell!' -- Sat 10am EST
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 09:57 AM by Bozita
Get in early. The stream fills quickly.

This Is Hell airs live every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM (US central time) on WNUR 89.3 FM Evanston/Chicago, and live all over the rest of the world via RealPlayer and Windows Media Player. Just go to WNUR's web site (http://www.wnur.org) and click on either the RealAudio or Windowsmedia button found just beneath the heading, "Listen Online."

This week's guests include:

* Village Voice political writer Rick Perlstein (http://www.villagevoice.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=%22rick+perlstein%22&ul=villagevoice.com&cmd=search&x=19&y=10). Rick's most recent work for the Voice includes a story on Bush's second term entitled "The Eve of Destruction" (http://www.villagevoice.com/news/index.php?issue=0503&page=perlstein&id=60130). And Rick has a new piece in The Nation on the right-leaning wing of the Democratic Party, the Democratic Leadership Council, called "Party Cannibals"
(http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20050207&s=perlstein). Rick is the author of "Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus," and is at work on a book about Richard Nixon and the 1960s.

* journalist Dahr Jamail (http://dahrjamailiraq.com/) will give us a live report from Iraq on the day before the elections

* economist Dean Baker co-author, with Mark Weisbrot, of "Social Security: The Phony Crisis" (University of Chicago Press). Dean writes the Economic Reporting Review, a weekly examination of the economic reporting in the New York Times and the Washington Post, and periodic analyses of the Federal Government's economic data on prices, employment, corporate profits, and the GDP. Dean is currently Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research (http://www.cepr.net).

Thanks to all our listeners who have been supporting our program and we look forward to brining you stories, perspectives and opinions that are not heard anywhere else on your radio dial.

8. "This is Hell" is the best radio show out there.
Listening to the guests is so much better than listening to hosts opine.

6. Perlstein's discussion was very thought provoking
The Eve of Destruction article was scary enough, and to hear it spoken aloud just makes it more solid.

His comments on the DLC, , , hmmmmmm.

11. It surprises me that only about three or four DUers are interested
in the This Is Hell program each week. Its confusing to me why this is.

for some reason my computer won't let me hear it. It starts connecting then gives me an error message. I am also computer illiterate. I would LOVE to listen to the show. Could you summerize what Dahr Jamail had to say?

18. So sorry you cannot get in. But see if you can get the archived shows
to run on your computer. A good place to start is Last week's show which was very good.

20. to hear show
You do need to get on early. Archives is better, when they are archived. Sometimes the shows are archived within 24 hours, sometimes it is a couple weeks. I wonder if they could offer a Quicktime connection?

14. this infuriates me.....I've been listening to the show for years
locally, but WNUR did something to their signal a year or so ago, and I can't get it on my radio anymore, and I can't ever get it on either real player or media player

I can occasionally get the archives, but have not once been able to get it live online

16. To be sure to get online you need to get on at least 10-15 minutes
before the show starts. I am lucky enough to live not too far from NU so the signal is safe here.

This is a very good show today, be sure to pick this one up from the archives.

19. so they just don't have the capacity on their server?
thanks.....never thought of getting on earlier

really makes me mad though; I used to be able to get their signal in car and at home, but whatever they did really weakened it for me, and I have to get a lot closer to Evanston now to hear it

21. access
I have called and complained that they should increase their capacity, but the problem is that This is Hell is the ONLY show WNUR broadcasts that regularly maxes out their capacity. Try listening to their basketball game now, you will right through. Same thing in the fall with the football games. Says something that This is Hell is out-pulling their football games. On most college stations, the football game is THE big show. Of course, it may also say something about Northwestern's sports program. It would also cost money to expand their Internet capacity and WNUR is a college station, ie perpetually broke, and we are asking them to spend money, for, in essence, only one show. To boost their ratings, maybe they should preempt their basketball and football games with This is Hell?

22. Yes, If they cannot even replace the broken mike which has been
broken for a month now, I do not believe extra band-width is in the budget.

This show is worth so much more than 95% of the other progressive shows out there and has the worst time getting it out to the masses.

24. The show is over, it ended early because of the game
Perlstein talked about how Bush hires people with checkered pasts like Kerik on purpose because he is able to insure their loyalty by holding their past deeds over their heads. Perlstein also talked about why the DLC purposely acts like the right wing Republican Party.

Dahr Jamail said the streets today are empty, completely. He talked about how the US actions are causing the civil unrest which was never there before. He believes the elections will change nothing.

Baker talked about the GOP reason behind the social security push, which is not to create private accounts but to shut down the whole system. He asked that people go to his website and use the materials there to question social security reform.

Everything was jam packed into two hours and we got almost no banter. I missed the banter. The show was good, but the banter is also a good part of the whole mix.

25. thanks! blind, broke, gapped toothed host, hermetically sealed, etc
jeff dorchen, moment of truth

totally agree about the back and forth....they sure like Amy Goodman a lot, don't they? and are they still joking about getting a slot on AAR?

btw, did you see Greg Palast, hosted by them, two years ago?

also, could they put the show in a worse time slot? for MOST of the year the show gets preempted by football, basketball, baseball and SOFTBALL!!!

any other day of the week would allow the show to be broadcast without getting cut. sometimes it's only on for an hour

what are they thinking there? as you've said, it's their most popular show, as well as the station's biggest fundraiser. bet the powers that be don't like that at all, considering how conservabot NU is, generally speaking

26. Well we did get to hear the National Beer jingle and the bottle cap
puzzler. Plus the hangover remedy was to roll a baseball bat over the back of your neck and head.

For me, Saturday mornings are great because it is one of the few times I am able to put aside four hours to be around to listen---when they so happen to run the full four hours.

31. Anyone who gets here early should perhaps start an early thread
to remind people to get logged in before all the slots fill up.

Nice to have company when listening to Chuck and the gang.
