the FLU is everywhere (USA map from Center for Disease Control) (link)
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 10:20 AM by diamond14

Here's the weekly FLU report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC)...

Let's not forget that bush* FAILED TO DELIVER ENOUGH FLU VACCINE...

This report covers the dates of the bush* coronation celebration, so perhaps all those RICH christian reTHUGlicans will all go home from DC with their little gift from bush*: the FLU

1. NC - missed work Thursday and Friday because of flu. I've wondered if las
last year's flu shot could have contributed to the fact that I didn't have it as bad as I've had it in the past.

2. Worse than 2004, better than 2003, 2001 and 2000, similar to 2002,
Synopsis:
During week 3 (January 16-22, 2005)*, influenza activity continued to increase in the United States. Five hundred ninety-three (18.5%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza viruses. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) is above the national baseline and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza is below the epidemic threshold. There have been three influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported to CDC this season. Fourteen states and New York City reported widespread influenza activity, 17 states reported regional influenza activity, and 10 states reported local activity. Nine states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported sporadic influenza activity.

If you look at the historical info on this site, you can compare this week's synopisis to the same week in previous years.

8. CDC should post the number of DEATHS from the FLU....seems that

has been totally removed from their web site this season, what with bush* FAILURE TO DELIVER ENOUGH FLU VACCINE on time....

all we get now from CDC is a bunch of manipulated statistics....with NO REAL NUMBERS....nowhere is the NUMBER OF DEATHS from flu/pneumonia every week in America....if you can find the NUMBER OF DEATHS, please post here for everyone to read...THANKS....

NUMBER OF DEATHS from FLU was commonly posted in the past....but that was before the bushites learned that STATISTICAL MANIPULATION will alter perceptions and SPIN bush* failures in every area...now in disease control...FLU??? what FLU? seems to be the approach this season....

give us the REAL NUMBERS, and then we'll do our own calculations....without the REAL NUMBERS, nobody can even pose questions....

9. I don't think they've posted the raw data in the weekly reports. From what
I can tell, it's alwasy just the percentages, and here they are (from the same link above -- the weekly report at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/):

Pneumonia and Influenza (P&I) Mortality Surveillance*:
During week 3, 7.7% of all deaths reported by the vital statistics offices of 122 U.S. cities were attributed to pneumonia or influenza. This percentage is below the epidemic threshold of 8.1% for week 3.

I don't know how you can on the one hand claim that the CDC site proves that there's a terrible epidemic, but then say that they're hiding the truth? If their stats aren't accurate, then why are you citing them in the first place?

I'll be the first to criticize Bush when these stats show an epidemic. But so far, it looks like things are better than average over the last couple years (which is probably dumb luck, so far).

10. How many DEATHS? that number must be known to make any sense
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 12:26 PM by diamond14
from these reports....

CDC posted some numbers in the middle of December in their reference reports....713 Americans DIED FROM THE FLU just in one week, but after that SHOCK, no more ACTUAL NUMBERS of DEATHS have been reported...

admit it...all you're seeing is STATISTICS...bushite SPIN, percentages...NO REAL NUMBERS....if you find the ACTUAL NUMBER OF DEATHS FROM THE FLU, please post it here for everyone...don't garbage up with more statistics if you can't find it...just TELL THE TRUTH...that you can't find the actual NUMBER OF DEATHS on CDC web site....

and...what is an epidemic???? seems to be a VERY ARBITRARILY determined number.....baselines from bushites....

I remember last year, when LOTS of kids in Colorado DIED from the FLU, and it turned out that CDC had NO CLUE...under pressure from WE THE PEOPLE, CDC is now counting pediatric deaths, but ONLY from a few hospitals, hardly significant....

----------------------------------

EXTRA SPECIAL: if you look at CDC data from the previous report, it WAS declared an epidemic, now, CDC decided that the FLU is INCREASING, but it's NOT an epidemic...that's what STATISTICAL MANIPULATION will get you.....

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/weeklyarchives2004-2005/weekly02.htm

During week 2 (January 9-15, 2005)*, INFLUENZA ACTIVITY CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN THE UNITED STATES...... The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) is above the national baseline and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza is ABOVE THE EPIDEMIC THRESHOLD.

3. Since it IS the peak of Flu season
I don't know why anyone would find this surprising. In fact, it's been a comparatively mild season- with a mild variant, though I suppose that's small solace to the people who've fallen ill....

12. Fujian vs Wellington
I'm not sure that the CDC is reporting on the Wellington variant. It will replace Fujian in the upcoming southern hemisphere vaccine for this year and probably for the north in the fall, but CDC doesn't mention Wellington (and Panama, in last year's vaccine) is long gone).

13. H3N2 vs H5N1
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 12:42 PM by pandemic_1918
If you think H3N2 is bad, you should look at H5N1 which has a fatality rate in the 80-90% range now.

Its spreading human to human more efficiently this season and clusters are forming all over Vietnam

http://news.google.com/news?q=dong+thap+H5N1+transmission&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=nn&oi=newsr

It will explode after the Tet celebrations on Feb 9 (year of the chicken), and when it arrives here you can ask what happened to emergency or pandemic preparedness (it will get very ugly very quickly).

14. It's in Cambodia!
Speaking of knowing where flu is, it looks like H5N1 is now being passed human to human in Cambodia

5. I had the flu terribly last week
I was sick for 4 or 5 days with it. It was terrible.

There were some schools closed due to the flu this past week. My friend's kids were home yesterday because of it.

6. Was in the ER last week with angina (successfully treated), the woman
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 11:01 AM by blondeatlast
in the next bed had flu--THAT flu. By sheer luck of having insulin dependent diabetes, a heart problem, and anemia (LUCKY ME!) I got a flu shot and was damn lucky even in spite of my health condition.

Thank God, or I probably would not be replying here today.

BTW, I live in the Phoenix, AZ metro area--if you're out this way, avoid the "Chafing Dish" restaurant like the plague (pun fully intended) for a while. I overheard her say she was a COOK there. To how many has it spread?

UGH.

17. I might be dreaming, but I could have sworn
I heard in an Air America News spot during Malloy the other night that nnow they are saying that the Flu shot Shortage may actually be a SURPLUS.

Gee, now that's it's all widespread and stuff, GOSH! We were WRONG! Everybody come and get your Flue Shot!

This is completely insane. Why NOW, are they saying there is a surplus, and if there is for what reason was it propagandized for MONTHS that there was a shortage?
