BUSH DECIDEDS TO BUILD PRESIDENTIAL HELICOPTER OVERSEAS!
"I am at a loss to explain why the Navy and the President would choose anything other than an all-American helicopter built by the company that has a flawless, 45-year track record," said Gov. M. Jodi Rell in a statement issued from her office. "It simply doesn't make any sense. I'm angry and I'm disappointed," said Rell.

Lockheed's winning entry, the US101, is based on a British-Italian AgustaWestland aircraft, now owned by Finmeccanica. The helicopter has several key components, including the main transmission and rotor blades, that will be built overseas.

6. I liked the DUer that combined this bit of news with the news that
the Republicans believed that increasing benefits to our Veterans was a national security problem.

8. $6.1 Billion for these helicopters. Is it just me or...........
does anyone else think this is absurd?
It kills me that everyone reports this as 1.6 billion. A crock of shit!

From DOD briefing:
MR. YOUNG: The cost to go in the program is, in research and development, which includes the procurement of three test aircraft, five pilot production aircraft, which form the increment-one initial capability to be delivered in 2009, and also three of the increment- two aircraft as a low-rate procurement purchase. That's $3.5 billion of effort, to be followed by procurement of the remaining increment-two aircraft, 15 helicopters, for $2.5 billion. So the cost to go to the government is $6 billion -- $6.1 billion.

Q: One-point-seven of $6 billion is committed today?

MR. YOUNG: Committed on the contract today.

More:
Q: How many aircraft overall and the total price?

MR. YOUNG: The objective of the program is 23 aircraft. And then, as I -- the cost to go on that program is about $6.1 billion, split between research and development and procurement.

Yes, ma'am?

Can't wait for * to send scads of military troops over to "supervise" Lockheed's overseas plants to make damnshure terr'ists don't plant li'l "gifts" in the helos...

21. Exactly--this is one of those issues that can
be used to somehow raise the consciousness of his blind supporters. They hate people who don't "buy American" (even as they buzz around in their foreign-made trucks, a/k/a "SUVs".)

23. Just suppose for a second that the better helicopter won.....
because it did. If spent, I want my taxdollars spent on a quality product. Seems like there are many that could care less.
