Does any other "Free" country have a Fox News-like Network? |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 11:16 AM by leftchick
I can only Imagine what many foreigners think when they see Faux news for the first time. I am sure they believe at first they are on Comedy Central and are watching a news parody show. Does any other (supposedly free) nation have this kind of propaganda network purporting to be "fair and balanced"?

both happen to be Murdoch outlets. Murdoch owns quite a bit around the world with focus on the US, UK, and Austraia. There is also some ownership in Chinese satellite TV viewership.
Most of the major mouthpieces all go back to the very few number of owners.

|
it's more balanced than, say, CNN in the USA. I'd say it's comparable to the US broadcast networks, or CNN International.

But in the sense of overt Reichwinging you're right, it's not as bad.

It seems to me A lot of Americans believe Fox is real news. I guess the question then is the RW media in other countries acknowledged for what they are? I do not think Fox is at all except in Liberal circles here.

Weird to think of it that way, but they are the voice of the Islamic version of conservative, nationalistic thinking.

perhaps the Arabic version of Al jazeera is but I can't read it so I don't know for sure. I read the English version daily and find it extremely credible vs much of the US media. What you have said is a RW talking point that doesn't pan out.

|
but I don't appreciate being slapped with the RW talking point label. Can we respectfully disagree with each other without being abrasive?
I read it, too, and am glad for the alternate point of view. It often takes a strong pan-Arabic perspective, Arab "patriotism" if you will, and that's what reminded me of Fox News.

8. I don't think al Jazeera is fundamentalist |
|
it's more 'Arab man on the street', tending towards being liberal. It will interview American and Israeli officials; the people who work for it have often worked for other broadcast networks like the BBC. If you haven't seen 'Control Room', try to - it's a documentary about al Jazeera during the invasion of Iraq.

17. Fundamentalist *is* such a loaded word, isn't it? |
|
But I still think it applies here. Outside of the American connotation, fundamentalism refers to a basic acceptance of older, conservative religious principles. al-Jazeera does not mock or denigrate conservative Islamic thought, not that it particularly promotes it, either. But al-Jazeera's editors understand that a majority of their viewers hold moderately to strongly conservative religious opinions.
I agree with your "Arab street" perception, but the Arab street is decidedly not liberal. It's nationalistic, wary or even hateful of outsiders, and admires strongmen.
That's what made me think of Faux.

Perhaps if you mean Pan-Arab nationalism, but there is no Arab state.
Al Jazeera is critical of the various governments that make up the Arab world, for the most part, in a way that I don't think Fox News is with regard to our government.

22. In Venezuela they have Globovision which is the US Propaganda station |
|
Up until this year, it was the only 24 hour news station Venezuela had. The corporate owners of Globovision spewed hatred of Chavez 24/7. This month Chavez put in new rules which is severly limiting the type of anti-Chavez propaganda Globovision can broadcast.
So while are racing toward corporate elite television, Chavez is working on breaking the corporate elite stranglehold.

|
One of their lackies was doing a "tour" of one of Saddam's old bunkers, dont all shaky and "rough", and the guy picks up a pair of chemical boots and goes, "Hmm, one wonders why you'd need chemical boots in a country with no weapons of mass destruction." I'm like, WTF?!?!?!?!?!
And then more crap about how "While Saddam was defying the UN and building bunkers like these while starving his people..."
It boggles the mind.
