DR. Rice on FOX: "We are in Iraq under UNITED NATIONS mandate" oh & 9/11
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 06:23 PM by Bluebear
"American and other coalition forces are there under U.N. mandate because the Iraqis believe that they're needed. The Iraqis are not yet capable of securing themselves."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,145833,00.html

And on CNN today:

"Wolf, the important point is that the president has said that our forces will have what they need to do the job.

And I just want to remind everyone that we did this because American security interests post-9/11 were at stake. And you can't put a price tag on our security.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0501/30/le.01.html

===

Just in case you weren't following along with the program.

3. She is technically correct
While the UN never approved the invasion... the UN did approve the occupation.

And if we had any brains, we'd start insisting it be supported. The aspects of the UN resolution which calls for steps to end the occupation.

36. It does not say we had the right to invade.
It also does not say the US specifically has the right to govern Iraq or occupy it. It is simply a call to countries that have not already invaded Iraq to Send peace keepers and aid.

39. Not what I read
First, nobody said that 1546 said we had the right to invade. It does do more than call for countries to send peacekeepers and aid, however. It authorizes the multinational force to provide security and work with the Iraqi government. In affect, it approves the occupation.

How does her nose not grow every single time she opens her mouth?

And oh, I didn't realize they were still allowed to repeat that old moldly lie (the biggest one of all) about the US being under threat from Iraq, especially since it's been proven that not even Iraq's NEIGHBORS were under threat from them!!!!

and why neither Tim Russert nor Wolf Blitzer asked her about that. Wasn't that an out and out lie??? Don't they feel stupid? Is that not motivation enough to call her on the lie?

God, if I had some dumbo trying to lie to me, and I am a reporter, I would call them on it.

22. Fooled me, I thought a joint resolution of Congress authorized this fiasco
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 06:47 PM by EVDebs
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/10/20021002-2.html

But I have trouble with the open-ended committment of US troops for unspecified numbers of years and also the vague geographical committment mentioned as:

"Whereas it is in the national security of the United States to restore international peace and security to the Persian Gulf region".

The War Powers Act of 1973

http://www.cs.indiana.edu/statecraft/warpow.html

required truthful 'circumstances' also, not lies to Congress, as the precursor to war...not 'pretext' for war. Common sense and the Gulf of Tonkin resolution- itself based upon a lie, making the War Powers Act of 1973 necessary in the first place, these circumstances varying daily make a mockery of the intent of the 1973 act.

The only saving grace is that the people, through Congress, still must be reported to and the war must face funding through the Congress.

Once people understand the pig in a poke they've been sold, they will understandably elect more Democrats and progressives to Congress. Amen.
