Poll question: What should be done with Geraldo Rivera?
He's on FOX, shaking hands, drooling on peoples' blue fingers, showing people dancing and everything else you might expect from him. :puke:

21. I believe I heard he was a proud member
of the faux fine news team. You know, those 'fair and balanced' folks.

3. My most favorite Geraldo moment...
was when those skinheads kicked the shit of him and he was running around the stage with blood pouring from his nose. If anybody deserves an ass kicking it's Geraldo

14. ...and he milked that with a bandage on his schnozzola
for about the next 12 years (it seems). But Oh! How I loved watching that video when his face met the chair. Hahaha
There should have been some wise guys bash him again in Big Al's empty vault.

7. Poor guy, he has fallen so far.
For those of you who don't know it, here is how he made his name way back when. He was a reporter for NYC's ABC local news. He did a special series on the hideous treatment of the states mentally retarded children and adults in state institutions for the retarded. He and his crew got into the infamous Willowbrook State facility on Staten Island without the administration knowing. The visuals were stunning, shocking, and representative of how institutions treated mentally ill and retarded individual. The institutions were huge, BTW, often the first choice for warehousing. He was rightfully hailed as an up and coming genius and crusading liberal. His reporting was a major part of ending the atrocities.

Other than defending Clinton during Monicagate, this was the only major news work he ever did, and it was some work.

The Willowbrook story WILL get him in to heaven (haha) but he should experience Iraq for a good long time.

10. I appreciated your information. I didn't know.
It seems that he traveled from quality journalism to (at least partial) artichect of that type of 'talk show' he did to (currently) someone who talks about how great the Bushies are.

12. But that story was also
the beginning of the end for mental institutions in this country. I hold Geraldo responsible along with greedy bureaucrats for closing these facilities and leaving our mentally disabled population with nowhere to go but the streets.

16. He was trying to get the conditions changed IN the institutions.
The 'de-institutionalization' movement was much broader. I do agree with you that there were many mis steps in that process. It was essentially, 'bait & switch'...OK, let's move these folks to better conditions in the community and then some states withdrew community support, e.g., Reagan in CA. The conditions had to be changed in the institutions, however, and he pretty much single handedly created the pressure to get that done. There was a great series of follow up stories all over the country prompted by this. Don't blame him for de-institutionalizaiton's failures to trying to get mistreatment stopped by the state government.

17. I understand
but he helped get the ball rolling by informing the public of the serious problems. If he really cared, he would have followed up with stories about what happened to all the residents of the homes once they were closed. Sure it wasn't his fault but he helped create the mess. Putting these people out on the streets (in their communities) just replaced one bad situation with another.

18. "If he really cared..." On target there. He did the cake walk to
his next big thing. Mentally retarded people did much better than the seriously, chronically mentally ill. There are group homes, shelters etc. for them but those with schizophrenia, etc. were never given equal treatment. It's a tragic choice we serve up: live in an institution that may involve serious injury and life risks or live on the street with serious risks. We do now acquit ourselves well for those who fall outside the bounds of "normal."
