The Politics of Deviance
Anne Hendershott
Description: In "The Politics of Deviance," sociologist Anne Hendershott writes about changing social norms and how they affect the way society defines deviance. Ms. Hendershott argues that public advocacy and special interest groups are changing the ways that we view certain types of social deviance. According to the author, deviance should be determined through reasoning and not by political and social trends. For example, Ms. Hendershott writes that a drug addict is now often seen as a victim of a medical problem and not as someone who chose to use drugs and became addicted as a result. The author continues the same logic in terms of teenage sexual behavior. She writes that by school systems not teaching abstinence, and in some cases showing sex-education videos, they're sending a message to teenagers that sexual promiscuity is an acceptable behavior.

1. I caught just a couple of minutes of her lecture
On Book TV...I didn't know exactly who she was or where she was coming from until she started talking about NAMBLA and then I figured it out. She's a conservo-fundie trying to make subtle ties between male homosexuality and child molestation.

I changed the channel pretty quickly...
