'Bush equals Hitler' adds up to holocaust denial

By Jonah Goldberg

We may be living in the worst period of Holocaust denial since the Nuremberg trials. I'm not referring to the twisted morons who insist that the Holocaust never happened the way the Monty Python guys insisted the parrot wasn't dead. I'm referring to the legions of Holocaust deniers in the Democratic Party, on the Web, on college campuses, in the mainstream press and, most acutely, in my e-mail box every morning, who reduce to the Holocaust to a triviality.
In America today - never mind Europe and the Middle East - ostensibly sophisticated and enlightened people see nothing particularly controversial about comparing George Bush to Adolph Hitler and the United States of America to Nazi Germany.
The examples are everywhere. Vanity Fair magazine asks if Richard Perle and Joseph Goebbels were "separated at birth." Whole Web sites are dedicated to the most astoundingly stupid and superficial comparisons between George Bush and Hitler (they both liked dogs, for example).
At every event protesting war, Bush, America, this, that and the other thing, one can find pictures of various administration officials in SS garb or bearing Hitler mustaches. On the Web, leftwing forums like Democraticunderground.com overflow with insubstantial people bolstering their self-esteem by pretending to "speak truth to power" to the unfolding Nazification of America.
(snip)

I even wanted to send an E-mail with a link this thread below attached to it to the author or editor, but wasn't sure if anyone else also wanted to comment about it. Also was thinking maybe someone else had some good threads bookmarked to include

It's time for another Bush/Nazis thread

1. No thread, but here are some excerpts from recent articles (w/ sources)
Lawyers Furious as US Builds (Gitmo) Death Chambers

LAWYERS expressed outrage yesterday at plans to put al-Qaeda suspects, including two Britons and an Australian, on military trial in Guantanamo Bay.

They would effectively be tried by a “kangaroo court”, stripped of all basic rights of due process that would be afforded in criminal courts in Britain or America, they said.

He said: “The construction of execution chambers makes virtually every lawyer in the Western world extremely angry. The idea that there is an artificial creation or enclave which, according to the Americans, is beyond the purview of all recognised systems of law is repugnant.”

The Courier Mail: US Plans Death Camp (May 26, 2003)
THE US has floated plans to turn Guantanamo Bay into a death camp, with its own death row and execution chamber.

Prisoners would be tried, convicted and executed without leaving its boundaries, without a jury and without right of appeal, The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported yesterday.

The plans were revealed by Major-General Geoffrey Miller, who is in charge of 680 suspects from 43 countries, including two Australians.

"This camp was created to execute people. The administration has no interest in long-term prison sentences for people it regards as hard-core terrorists."

CBS Producer Fired For Comparing The Mood In America To That Of Germans Who Helped Hitler's Rise To Power
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article2845.htm

Producer Is a Casualty in CBS's 'Hitler' Miniseries

In the April 12 TV Guide, the publication says that "Gernon stated his belief that fear fueled both the Bush administration's adoption of a preemptive-strike policy and the public's acceptance of it." According to the article, "Gernon said a similar fearfulness in a devastated post-World War I Germany was 'absolutely' behind that nation's acceptance of Hitler's extremism."

Gernon is quoted as saying of the miniseries, which tracks Hitler's rise to power in 1930s Germany: "It basically boils down to an entire nation gripped by fear, who ultimately chose to give up their civil rights and plunged the whole world into war.

"I can't think of a better time to examine this history than now," he added.

The article further quotes him as saying that "when an entire country becomes afraid for their sovereignty, for their safety, they will embrace ideas and strategies and positions that they might not embrace otherwise."

Wall Street Journal:
War Produces Rift in Media Between U.S., Other Nations
… British television reporter Geoff Meade asked the officer what he would say to Iraqis and other Muslims who might welcome such images. Some U.S. reporters looked stunned at the aggressiveness of the question. A hush fell on the room. The general eyed him coldly and parried the query. Afterward, says Mr. Meade, a veteran correspondent with Sky News, a service of British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC, "Somebody joked to me that I'd find myself at the back of the room along with the French and the Germans."

"We believe people need to see the truth, and there's no need to make the truth cosmetic because it's not pretty," says Nawal Assad, a producer at al-Jazeera's London office.

… callers on Italian talk shows criticized as censorship the U.S. government's request to U.S. networks to refrain from showing the images. In Germany, the press has engaged in lengthy dissections of U.S. news organizations, often concluding that the U.S. media has gone through "Gleichschaltung," an ominous word used to describe how the Nazis took over key public institutions, including the media (rough translation: "bringing into line").

3. "Gleichschaltung," an ominous word, that some colaborators...........
Seems to have missed. When I hear stories of Jewish industries shipping goods on Nazi cargo lines right up until the time of the start of WWII, cringe seems an impolite word.
The merchants were unwitting victims as much as anybody, I mean it wasn’t like they broadcast to the population what they were doing.

Most of it fits somehow, somewhere, you just have to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I am sure it’s hard for some, especially when they put them $$$$$ sign's in front of their eyes, it does blind some people, you know. Greed can be fostered in any culture and in the subtext of what things look like today, with the me-me generation going full bore, one need not wonder too much to be able pick out a few big Ah-ha’s.

THE TRIAL

On the opening day of the trial, the twenty-one indicted war trial defendants took their seats in the dock at the rear of the sage-green draped and dark paneled room. Behind them stood six American sentries with their backs against the wall. At 10 a.m., the marshal shouted, "Attention! All rise. The tribunal will now enter." The judges from the four countries walked through a door and took their seats at the bench. Sir Geoffrey Lawrence rapped his gavel. "This trial, which is now to begin," said Lawrence, "is unique in the annals of jurisprudence." The Major War Figures Trial was underway in Nuremberg.

The trial began with the reading of the indictments. The indictments concerned four counts. All defendants were indicted on at least two of the counts; several were indicted on all four counts. Count One, "conspiracy to wage aggressive war," addressed crimes committed before the war began. Count Two, "waging an aggressive war (or "crimes against peace"), addressed the undertaking of war in violation of international treaties and assurances. Count Three, "war crimes," addressed more traditional violations of the laws of war such as the killing or mistreatment of prisoners of war and the use of outlawed weapons. Count Four, "crimes against humanity," addressed crimes committed against Jews, ethnic minorities, the physically and mentally disabled, civilians in occupied countries, and other persons. Perhaps the greatest of these crimes against humanity was, of course, the mass murder of jews in concentration camps--the so-called "Final Solution." For an entire day, defendants listened as prosecutors read a detailed list of the crimes they stood accused of committing.

THE PROSECUTION CASE

The next day Robert Jackson delivered his opening statement for the prosecution. Jackson spoke eloquently for two hours. He told the court, "The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated."

The prosecution case was divided into two main phases. The first phase focused on establishing the criminality of various components of the Nazi regime, while the second sought to establish the guilt of individual defendants. The first prosecutorial phase was divided into parts.

6. Jonah + W : DWI Brothers in Arms
Yes! Our Boy Jonah was drunk as a skung during Senior Week at his alma mater(May,1991),tiny Goucher College in Towson,Md. Upon returning to campus from his favorite water hole, "The Crease" he failed to negotiate a not-so-sharp turn and flattened a campus telephone pole.

Baltimorwe Police were kept at bay-Mommmy's friends from DC intervened-somebody paid $500.00 to replace the pole and that was that.

Why do I know this? I got the call from Campus Security.:nopity:

4. I dunno...
Doing an Alister Campbell on the term "insubstantial people":

I always had a sneaking admiration for the Nazgul/Ring Wraiths in Lord of the Rings, they got a sort of 'political hardness' about the way they conduct themselves.

They are sort of half in this world and half in a shadow world, I suppose you could regard them as insubstantial beings.

"DU: the Ring Wraiths of the left"

5. The myth and legend, and how it materializes into fact
Actual hard evidence, they say there is none. Then when it’s produced, they say your exaggerating, after the refute of that claim, they don’t bring it up we are trying to heal the wounds, and on and on. The denial sort reminds me of a couple close family members that took their denial of things almost to a way of living one’s life, which subsequently brought into their lives to an early check out. (In my opinion, of course)

Being an enabler or a patsies for, is different from being in the ‘party of’, seeing patterns emerge and pointing them out is not a crime. Extracting one self from such doings is onerous and consuming, but sometimes is necessary

http://gast.radio-o.at/gusen/gu10101x.htm
Because the Mauthausen Central Camp was under construction at this time, as well, both camps (Mauthausen and Gusen) were administered by SS-Standartenfuehrer Franz Ziereis from one central command in the Wienergraben Valley. But in March 1940, SS-Hauptsturmfuehrer Karl Chmielewski came from KZ Sachsenhausen to KZ Gusen, where he remained in command until 1943.
The first group of inmates were primarily priests and offenders of the NAZI regime from Germany and Austria (like Dr. Johann Gruber).

Exposed to the heaviest work in the stone quarries of KASTENHOF and GUSEN and in the construction of KZ Gusen I, they died quickly. "Lager" Gusen became one of the first in the Third Reich to exterminate people.

Extermination of the Polish
With the German invasion of Poland, the Gestapo used KZ Gusen I to exterminate a large group of Polish intellectuals in the stone quarries of Gusen and on the construction sites. The first group of 480 Polish inmates was sent to Gusen on March 9, 1940. Within a year, Gusen grew from some 800 inmates to some 4,000 by the spring of 1941. Some 1,522 died in 1940 due to the heavy work in the stone quarries of Gusen and the brick-production plant at Lungitz. In late 1941 the next group of inmates to be exterminated at KZ Gusen by hard work were Soviet prisoners of war. This group of inmates was also the first to be gassed at KZ Gusen in 1942.
The crematorium was also set into operation on January 29, 1941 at KZ Gusen. During this period KZ Gusen also got its own death register. Prior to this, the victims had to be registered by the municipality of St. Georgen/Gusen to which the territory belonged.

KZ Gusen developed more rapidly
than Mauthausen Camp
In late 1941, KZ Gusen´s size, with 8,500 inmates, surpassed the neighboring Mauthausen "Central" Camp´s by one thousand inmates.
In fact, excepting 1943, the Gusen Camp(s) had more inmates than the camp at Mauthausen.
On January 1, 1941 both camps at Gusen and Mauthausen became the only Category III camps in the Third Reich - a term meaning "camp of no return" to Gestapo officials all over the Reich. Being sent to KZ Gusen was, in fact, a death sentence until autumn 1943.

7. Goldberg himself is a good example
of why the talk of Nazis is good. I find most of this talk extremely annoying, just because it's so exaggerated, but Goldberg is exaggerating too by making too much out of it. If it were historians talking this way, I'd be with him, but it's not. It's amateurs, and their talk isn't hurting anyone. Some people go along with it, and a lot of people just ignore it.

But it's important that they're allowed to talk like this, because it means we're being vigilant, because if people like Goldberg had their way, the U.S. actually would be like Nazi Germany. I don't know if the following quote is technically fascist, but it sounds close enough:

http://www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg042302.asp

Well, I've long been an admirer of, if not a full-fledged subscriber to, what I call the "Ledeen Doctrine." I'm not sure my friend Michael Ledeen will thank me for ascribing authorship to him and he may have only been semi-serious when he crafted it, but here is the bedrock tenet of the Ledeen Doctrine in more or less his own words: "Every ten years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business." That's at least how I remember Michael phrasing it at a speech at the American Enterprise Institute about a decade ago (Ledeen is one of the most entertaining public speakers I've ever heard, by the way).
