1. No, She Didn't
She reaffirmed her support for Roe V. Wade when she said that people on both sides of the issue need to find common ground.

8. Ellen Goodman today on "common ground"

Whose common ground?
By Ellen Goodman | January 30, 2005

If there is any shared turf in this debate it would be the one that both Clinton and Kennedy bid for: a flat-out campaign to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Yet at this moment, the FDA has once again delayed approval of putting Plan B, the after-the-act contraceptive, on the drug store shelf. This emergency contraceptive, if taken soon enough, can prevent more than 80 percent of unwanted pregnancies.

It's been four years since the manufacturer applied for approval to have Plan B sold over the counter. One FDA advisory committee after another has found it safe and effective for all ages.

Even the notion that it would lead to increased sexual behavior has been dismissed by a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Indeed, as David Grimes of Family Health International wrote, saying that emergency contraception would promote risky sexual behavior is like saying "that a fire extinguisher beneath the kitchen sink makes one a risky cook."

Safe, legal, and rare. We're already at the meeting ground. The question is not how far we move but when the other side will get there.

2. She's running for president
She has to establish centrist street-cred, as she is already well known
in her liberalism.... so expect her to sound like a vichy-dem for the
next 4 years to build in to a true uniter of the partisan divide and
our first female president.

4. But she never changed her position on choice
and that's what people need to focus on.

5. Didn't say she has... just she's re-making her appearances
She has made the argument, that we've also seen here on DU, that most
even pro-choice persons will come to a consensus on the "baby's life"
further and further in to the pregnancy.

I'm gonna run a test, just to verify, but methinks she's looking to this
ground for some broader consensus, so that the partisan divide is less
black and white.

And well known for WHAT liberalisim? This former Goldwater girl has never forgotten her origins. She is a centrist verging on conservative. Just look at her voting record.

3. No
She's still firmly pro-choice. Some people didn't pay attention to what she actually said in her speech. She emphasized the need to reduce abortions through family planning, the morning-after pill, etc. I don't know many people for abortion rights would disagree with that.

12. That's not my point
In such discussions here on DU, when it gets down to the brass tacks,
people who are pro choice are often willing to deny that choice late
in the term, when there are no driving reasons for termination. The
further you get towards 9 months with a healthy baby, the more
pro-choice people you lose. The terminology itself is divisive,
as it paints the issue as black and white, when in reality it is
ever so grey gray.

By even framing the debate as she has, she's appealing to people who
are centrists on the debate... my point.. nothing more... she's running
for president.

6. Not at all.
She reaffirmed her pro-choice position. She mentioned sex education & other methods for minimizing the need for abortion, but did not back down.

9. please send your rightwing nutcase friend here
http://mediamatters.org/items/200501260014

"In contrast to Garrett's claim that Clinton had changed her stance, a January 25 New York Times article pointed out that while Clinton "appeared to be reaching out beyond traditional core Democrats," she did not actually change her longstanding abortion-related policy positions."

I understand why your friend thinks this, Fox was reporting it as fact.
