WASHINGTON - Pointing to a new report that finds that violent video games are growing more graphic and intense and that retailers, promoters, and parents have made little progress in protecting kids from harmful games, Senator Joe Lieberman today called for a new round of congressional hearings on the issue.

The seventh annual MediaWise Video Game Report Card, released today by the National Institute on Media and the Family, shows that as sales for video games and the number of adults playing them have risen dramatically, a significant number of the best-selling games of the past year glorify and reward extreme violence, particularly against women.

"The content of many cutting edge games is becoming more and more vivid, violent, and offensive to our most basic values," Lieberman said at a Capitol Hill news conference. "This relatively small but highly popular minority is not just pushing the envelope - they are shooting, torturing and napalming it beyond all recognition, and beyond all decency."

Lieberman, who held the first-ever hearings in Congress on video game violence and successfully pushed manufacturers to adopt a detailed content-based rating system, noted today that, "while the market evolves, its consideration and concern for the millions of children who are still playing these games has not."
