Encouragement from The Nation |
|
The so-called South may not be so solid after all. In the Editor's cuts of "The Nation", Katrina Vandenhuevel (ms) argues that Gore did much better in the South than he is generally given credit for and that there is a smoldering anger over job loses in the South which can be tapped into by the dems.
Her conclusion:
The bottom line for Democrats should be clear: Fighting the next election on behalf of jobs, family farms, healthcare and education for all, a populist Democratic nominee could give George Herbert Hoover Bush a real race in a region that the GOP--and its media boosters--now take for granted.

1. But the Dems want to take all their guns away |
|
And give all their jobs to jazz musicians.
And get their daughters pregnant...
then make them all have abortions.

3. Actually, Dean doesn't |
|
He wants to let the states decide.
Mark Warner won the contest for governor in Virginia by making sure the hunters knew that he wouldn't take their guns away.
Dean did the same thing in Vermont.
Some people say that Gore lost West Virginia on the gun issue.
I don't think the GOP can use the gun card with Dean. Of course, they will use the gay card. But I think Dean will counter by saying that both issues should be states rights issues.
Of course, there is a huge segment of the white population that will not vote for ANY Dem, but the white swing voters in the South and the mid-West will feel safe if they know that their voice will be heard at the state level.

5. Absomofuckinglutely. She is right on target. |
|
Job losses and jobs exported overseas are Democrats #1 ticket to the Whitehouse. Address job losses and you win in 2004. Ignore them to placate corporate cash cows, and you lose. It's as simple as that.

9. We need to build a base in the South that will last |
|
We could take advantage of the anti-globalization sentiment (anti-China!), but I think we need more depth than that. Education is the key to success. We can also offer support for those going through hard times.
