The age of counter-enlightenment
By Mary Ann Lindley
EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR

One highly regarded Florida administrator who has worked amid Capitol politics for years, joked -sort of, and very quietly - that Florida is now in the age of counter-enlightenment.

It would be easy to suggest that this dumbing down and subsequent ineffectiveness has everything to do with political party power. But it has a lot to do with process, too.

Specifically when Florida voters elected to limit legislators to two terms we were saying we didn't care if lawmakers know virtually nothing about the work we expect them to perform.

Where else do we hire green people who are blissfully ignorant about the responsibilities and requirements of the job - who just know they don't like the way it's being done? snip>
