Ward Churchill is a Nazi asshat. Who cares what happens to him?
Churchill decided the 9/11 WTC victims as a group deserved to die. The thinking of a Nazi scumbag. I wouldn't care if he got fired any more than I'd care if a professor who said all Jews deserved to be killed by Hitler deserved to die.

Who gives a fuck about Ward Churchill

1. The point is
not 'what' he said, but his freedom to say it.

Guaranteed in your constitution.

2. Who's making it illegal for him to say it?
He has the freedom to say whatever he wants. The freedom of speech of others allow people to call him an asshat for it.

A governmental institution should not be allowed to have him fired for it...

20. free to say it...yes. Entitled to be PAID $$ FOR IT BY YOU....NOPE!
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 05:19 PM by leftyandproud
Imagine if he were a radical right-wing neocon preaching death to all muslims/gays, etc...saying that AIDS is a good thing because it is wiping out blacks and homosexuals...that "natural selection" is taking it's course and the strongest are surviving when the USA bombs other countries...

Does he have "freedom of speech"...YES! He is free to speak his mind on the street, in any public place, or in any private journal/newspaper that publishes his work.

But would YOU feel good PAYING him to say/write crap like that? Knowing that he has a captive audience of YOUR kids to spew these things at?

I sure wouldn't.

6. Read Closely What He Said
He said that the financiers who worked in teh WTC and the people who worked at The Pentagon were targets of those in foreign countries who hate us - NOT because of our freedom - because of the economic dominance we've exerted around the world. He did NOT say he was happy that police. fire fighters, or others like that died - only that looking a 9/11 from the perspective of those who planned it, the WTC and the Pentagon were perfect targets.

And we ALL need to be concerned if an educator with unpopular views gets fired from a public university. That's government censorship, and we should all be opposed to that, IMHO.

He said that we cannot be surprised that people retaliate against us for our imperialism, not that we deserved it. Please try to keep up with the facts.

8. Do you even really understand his argument?
Or do you just buy hook, line and sinker what Blitz Wolfer and the other Media Whores tell you?

Please state Churchill's argument and we'll see if you "get it".

His commentary was much deeper than saying the victims deserved to die. You are merely repeating the dumbed down version of it that is for mass consumption.

Academic freedom, and the freedom of expression that goes along with it, means that all well-considered views-- regardless of popularity, political correctness, or cultural sensitivity-- should be expressed and debated on their merits. I would defend an neo-conservative scholar in the same forum. When we begin censoring ideas in academia, rather than debating them and undermining them intellectually, an educated society loses.

The way I read it, he didn't say they deserved to die. In fact he said just the opposite. They paid the price for America's hegemonic policies.

23. THE now infamous paragraph....
Well, really. Let’s get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America’s global financial empire – the “mighty engine of profit” to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved – and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to “ignorance” – a derivative, after all, of the word “ignore” – counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in – and in many cases excelling at – it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I’d really be interested in hearing about it.

..................................................................

so honest workers (TECHNOCRATS) arent innocent and that w.r.t. destroying the WTC there was no better way of ....
"visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns".

its ok to be an anti-capitalist.....its not ok to label the workers of theses financial institutions "little eichmanns".

Yeah....no problem,ward....GO FUCK YOURSELF !!

30. Context
He is speaking of the matter as viewed by those affected by our policies.

Yes you can pull that section out by itself and spin it in a nasty way. Or you can read the entire document and see what it is he is saying.

For what it's worth you are playing the game Rove wants you to play.

35. Dozens of furious denials of the patently obvious
When someone challenges others to suggest "a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation" it implies that as far as he is concerned the 9/11 attack was the best, most effective, and in fact only way of "visiting some penalty." At least until someone suggests something better, more effective, etc.

How much space is there between saying that and saying the victims deserved it? Help me here. A befitting penalty is deserved by those penalized, by definition.

Also, it has been repeatedly denied that Churchill's "I" in this passage is in fact referring to himself. He is alleged instead to be speaking on behalf of some imagined other. Having read the article through, I don't see evidence for that assertion. Help me here too.

We did a poll earlier today (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3091437) and the majority were in support of his ideas though there is obviously room for discussion of the actual rhetoric he used.
