Related? Vannevar Bush and George W. Bush
Hi, all,

I'm reading Edwin Black's "War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create A Master Race," and am trying to discern whether George W. Bush is related to early eugenicist Vannevar Bush?

Anyone know?

(By the way, "War Against the Weak" is an excellent book, but overwhelmingly sad and shocking, too.)

1. No relation, one webpage says

... All these people overlook the most important 20th-century Bush, by the way: Vannevar Bush, the physicist who is credited with inventing the idea of hypertext, as well as with organizing scientific research for the federal government during and after World War II. I was crushed to discover recently that he was not GWB's uncle, or any other near relation. (Anyone who knows of a relationship, please tell me.)

Edit to add second citation:

... There is another Bush who plays prominently in the whole NWO scheme, though there is no claimed blood relation..He was a man by the name of DR. Vannevar Bush(1890-1974) and during the40's and 50's he was the head of the government department known as the Majestic 12, or MJ-12.

2. well, he's not related to V. Bush, but how about...
the Strongbow? Richard de la Clare, a Norman who invaded Ireland. he's also directly related to Dermot McMurrough, a king who was denounced as a traitor.

interesting, huh? makes you wonder how much further back he can be traced.

6. Um...so what?
So am I. So are probably millions of other people. Interesting, but it doesn't mean anything.

3. How could they be?
Vannevar Bush has a brain and is considered the prime motivator for the establishment of the National Science Foundation. There is even an NSF prize named in his honor. A good bio at this link:

4. Vannevar was also an important inventor...
Since his invention of the memex machine is widely known to be the forerunner of the concept of hypertext. The very nature of the world wide web is thought by many to have originated with ol' Vannevar... However...

He despised the humanities and social sciences (he badly weakened American anthropology when he choked off a large part of its funding in the 1930s), and refused to talk to the librarians who could have helped refine his ideas. But the memex is still an important accomplishment, because it directly inspired the development of hypertext technology.

also, there's this:

Vannevar Bush plays an important role in many UFO conspiracy theories as the head of Majestic 12, an organization supposedly formed by Dwight Eisenhower to investigate and later cover up an alien crash in Roswell, New Mexico.

5. Thanks, everyone!
If you get a chance to read "War Against the Weak," I'd recommend it. It's a well-documented (but depressing) book covering many things we weren't taught in U.S. high schools . . . certainly not when I was in school in the late 70s and early 80s.
