Dean wins straw poll at Democratic picnic in Tennessee
About 2,600 Democrats from across teh state attended a labor day picnic last weekend at the Charles Hand Farm in Montgomery County. 877 people took part in a straw poll. Here are the results:

Dean--348 (about 40%)
Gephardt 232
Edwards 125
Kerry 58
All the other candidates had below 50 votes.

Dean organizers in Tennessee described the results as significant because the picnic was sponsored by labor groups, which are backing Dick Gephardt.

1. STRAWS
When you only have straws to grasp, you grasp at straws.

6. strawpolls are good indications of candidates
organizing strengths. Plus it is good publicity.

3. That's what many months of press gets you.
People are under the impression that Dean is the only candidate who has ever spoken against Bush.

5. Take it to the bank
That is a great reason for Dean's success, but it does nothing to counter the people's perception. And since I support Dean, don't expect me to help counter that perception.

After Dean is in the White House, the naysayers can pat themselves on the back and say "If only the press gave DK (or Kerry, or Edwards, or Sharpton) the same attention, then he would be in the Oval Office." Not a lot of consolation in that, but it will offer the ability to save a small amount of pride.

Or, instead of bemoaning the lack of press for a particular candidate, start doing something to change that. Kerry has enough stature and pull to round up the press corp whenever he wants. He can invite them into his home, chat with them about current legislation - something Dean can't do.

"Dean, Dean, Dean, Dean..." - John F. Kerry
