16. Emotion is a trick the RW uses to deflect criticism.

Yesterday on Fresh Air I listened to an ex-CIA guy respond to criticisms of their behaviour in Chile 30 years ago.

Basically, all he did was talk about the CIA's 'feelings'. He said they didn't intend for the results of the coup and they felt really bad when they saw how things played out.

Organizations don't have feelings. They have policies. Sometimes those policies destroy lives. If individuals within the organization feel bad about that later, I don't give a shit. It's totally irrelevant, and it definitely doesn't forgime them for their policies.

I think trying to use emotion to deflect criticism must be in some RW playbook. I don't know what Rumsfield is doing, but if he's trying to deflect attention from Bush's policies and make it look like he's sad about how things are going...well, I don't know what he's doing.
