1. Oh, I see.
You put Chafee under the "Other" column. I think the man deserves his own column, and you shouldn't be doing this to him. Edit your post and make a new column called REPUBLICAN VOTING NO, and put Chafee in it. Or is Chafee's vote not as important because he's not a Democrat?

4. Democrats Voting No
The point was to show that there was a whole slew of Democrats who got it right. The reason Bush got away with waging this shameful war is the large number of Democrats who got this not-very-difficult vote wrong.

A lot of the Yes voters represent Red states, which makes their actions more comprehensible than that of Senators representing Blue states. Of course it doesn't excuse them. The Yes votes cast by New York Senators Clinton and Schumer, New Jersey's Torricelli, and Massachusetts' John Kerry are inexplicable. What were these people thinking?

The list is sorted first on the party field, then on the vote field. That's how Chaffee and Jeffords ended up together.

9. I don't think you give Chafee enough credit
More than half of Democrats voted for the war, but Chafee bucked the party line and was the ONLY Republican out of 49 to vote against it. That takes guts.

2. now find me the 1990 Iraq vote
If the legends are true no Senator who voted against going to war can become President, which is both true and false at the same time(depending if you consider Al Gore the President).

Does this mean that only Lieberman can become President?

5. I will be ashamed of voting for Diane Feinstein ....
...for the rest of my life. She betrayed her constituents, 90 percent of whom opposed authorizing the invasion. She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Bush* when she should have opposed him.

6. Don't Be Ashamed
Don't be ashamed of voting for Diane Feinstein .... don't vote for her! It's tragic when Democratic office holders forget their obligations to their constituents, but you are not obligated to continue to support them.

I like Chuck Schumer, and I'm going to miss voting for him. There was a time, too, when I thought Hillary was kinda neat, and I voted for her. Never again!

There's gotta be a penalty for all that grief and carnage. We can blame most of it on Republicans, but not all of it. Don't vote for Feinstein.

16. Typical DU logic
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 10:53 PM by jiacinto
We should "punish" those Democrats who voted "yes" and let the GOP have all those seats. What a great idea! Let's have only 30 Democratic Senators, 150 House Members, and 10 Governors? That party would meet the standards of the far left, and would be 100% loyal to the far left agenda; but it would be in no position to do anything.

I am sure that many of those Senators who voted Yes have done many good things for this country. And they are probably with us more than 75% of the time; but, in typical far left logic, that's not good enough. They should be replaced with someone who will be there only 10-25% of the time so that the people who were there 75% of the time can be "punished".

Why do I even bother? I guess that you would rather have a totally Republican Senate because the far left didn't get its way 100% of the time.

19. Punishing Democrats
We should "punish" those Democrats who voted "yes" and let the GOP have all those seats

I agree with the first part: let's punish those Democrats who voted yes. I don't agree that we should let the GOP have all those seats.

Can you imagine the strength of John Kerry's candidacy if he'd shown some courage at a time when it was needed? Kerry's supporters are correct that Dean's opposition to the war wasn't as risky as it would have been for somebody already holding a national office. But Kerry himself wimped out and he doesn't deserve any consideration for the presidency.

Let's not let the GOP take these seats. Instead, let's elect solid Democrats with values we can support.

that doesn't oppose?

The patriot act got a majority of dem senate votes, as did the war.

These guys have got to stand up on the big issues. I understand needing to cave some time on small stuff, but a war and a $200-$500B price tag are not small issues, nor is gutting the bill of rights.

38. The Patriot Act got EVERY Dem Senate vote except one.
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 03:18 AM by PurityOfEssence
That was Russ Feingold. This should tell you something, and that something is that it isn't so clear from our little armchairs.

Someday we'll know what "evidence" was paraded before the Congress leading up to the war vote; much is still classified.

All of the Dems voted yes on a non-binding vote of support to keep "under god" in the Pledge of Allegiance; what do you think of that?

The "war" vote was also limited to only Iraq, so Congress didn't just lay down entirely. They were also told that it all avenues of inspection and U.N. diplomacy were to be used; it's simply not cut-and-dried. I don't think it was a cynical or cowardly calculation on all of their parts; there are many things in play here. Regardless, enough people did get it right to dispel too much speculation about it being the greatest hoodwinking in human history, and it's depressing.

27. Metaphorical Blood
What you are encouraging is bloody primaries

I don't think you intend the irony implicit in this statement. Voting for the war meant that politics is more important than the lives of Arabs and their children. That position is unacceptable to me. Given a choice between metaphorical blood and real blood, I'll take metaphor. Thousands of innocent lives have been lost.

Let's have straightforward politics for a change. Our generation will be judged harshly by the generations who come after us. John Kerry's vote in favor of the war is simply inexcusable. This man should not be president, and I emphatically encourage other Democrats not to vote for him.

Typical DU logic again: spend more time trying to defeat Democrats.

No, we're trying to defeat Republicans. The problem is that the elections are only the first step, and what matters is defeating Republican actions. Democratic candidates who are not equally committed to defeating Republicans where it counts -- on the Congressional floor -- aren't much better than Republicans in those seats.

It's been said dozens of times: if just getting a (D) in office was all that mattered, we'd be on easy street -- just nominate George W. Bush as the Democratic candidate. Funny, that solution doesn't seem too popular.

Bloody or not, we need to have those primary battles. We need to clear out the apples that go bad when we find them. If it weren't for "trying to defeat Democrats", Strom Thurmond would have died one of ours -- oh, what a lost opportunity that was, I guess, huh?

In my recollection include:

Al Gore
Michael Dukakis
Walter Mondale (particularly after the Gary Hart scandal)

The primary seasons that nominated Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were no less nasty than what we're engaging in now...
