BTK="Loony Right". Typical Republican Values
Thought I'd post this do get some discussion going about how effective the Repubs are at "defining" Democrats and Liberals. Can't two play at that game?

I am so tired of the right wing corporate media putting up some "whack" job, long-haired, dope smoking, unwashed, hippie with flowers in their hair (apologies to long-haired hippies) and using that as an example of "All Democrats" or "All Liberals".

They pull this crap all the time! IMHO, that is one of the main reasons that they have come to power! With the help of the "sensationalist media", they have been able to define Democrats and liberals by the "extremes" in our party. Think Rush hammering away for three hours on the "loony left". It's not by accident that he came up with that phrase.

It's the perfect, cheap way to "dehumanize" their political enemies. If "Joe Sixpack" associates everything Democratic with their preferred stereotype, then even though the Democratic Party is the one that fights for Joe Sixpack, even though Democratic Policies help make Joe Sixpack's lot in life a little better...Joe Sixpack will never vote for a Democrat, or a liberal, because he sees them as the caricature the right has made.

Maybe now we have learned to "fight fire with fire". Maybe it's past time we define the right by the "extremes" on their side. Maybe Joe Sixpack will take a closer look when he hears the word "conservative" and sees a white robed, hooded, peodophilic, serial killing rapist.

1. I don't know if we can pull that off
One of the keys to Conservative's success at their labelling attempts is their absolute conviction that they are right. I don't know if we are capable of generally pulling up that same conviction--at least as regards to calling them pedophiles and rapists. That's pretty hardcore.

We might focus instead on the lying side of the equation. Equate them with corporate owned liars who always put the interests of CE0s over the interests of the people. That's an argument we can make with conviction, and it plays off of ideas alerady in their minds.

3. I Know You Are Probably Right
and labeling all Repubs as serial killers is a bit over the top. I'm just so frustrated at times. It seems that they have all of these people on their side that do nothing but throw hand grenades and bombs our way. In return we say things like "I really don't appreciate you calling me a baby killing, America hating, Yellow Bellied Communist, Terrorist Sympathizer" so please stop it.

I'm tired of being defined by these people by the "lowest common denominator".

I want someone on the Democratic side that won't continue "bringing a knife to a gunfight". Maybe that person is Howard Dean, but I don't know.

2. When they talk about the Red State Morals....
I want to ask, 'You mean good church goers like the BTK killer, the woman in Texas who cut off her baby's arms or the couple just arrested for sexually abusing their infant'.

How dare they lecture the 'blue states' (AKA Democratic leaning states, liberal Northeast) on the superior values of the conservatives!!! Bad things can happen anywhere and bad people can be of any political persuasion or even apolitical.

4. Roger That
but you can't argue with the success they have had in defining us. They've turned the word liberal into a "4 letter word"

I call it "Defining Democracy Down".

5. On TV last night
the guy who's writing the book on BTK observed that he was a "registered Republican" as well as a church official and family man. So THAT'S their idea of "family values"????

6. This is a stupid arena to debate in.
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 09:50 AM by Padraig18
Serial killers are NUTS, for pity's sake. John Wayne Gacy was a Democrat, if you'll recall. I see absolutely ZERO chance of a debate involving the political affiliation of a SERIAL KILLER as convincing so much as a single voter to support our party and its candidates, and if I'm wrong, I'd like a coherent explanation of why you think so.

10. Really?
How many former Democrats have you met that now vote Repub because

- "them liberals all want to take away my money and give it to a welfare queen"

- "them liberals are killing babies"

- "them liberals hate the military and are weak on defense"

- "them liberals, if we let them in charge, we'd all be speaking French"

- "them liberals destroyed the military"

- "them liberals were responsible for 9/11"

- "them liberals don't share my "values"

- "them liberals are communist"

I will argue with you to the death that those above statements are false, sterotypical, and disproven over and over again by facts.

I will also argue that the "right-wing" has been extremely effective in convincing a large number of voters that these statements "define" the typical liberal and Democrat. It's the only way they win elections. They are wrong on the issues. Polls show that over and over and over again, that when it comes to issues, the Democrats are more in touch with a majority of Americans.

That is why it is key to them to not talk about the issues, but instead defame, impugn, and define Democrats by the lowest common denominator.

21. OK. I'll Try to Address What You Posted
"Serial killers are NUTS" - On this we can agree. Serial killers are nuts. However, if the Repub echo-chamber has not been successful in "demonizing" the word liberal, why do so many politicians run from the word as if you were calling them a serial killer? You kind of confirm my point. You might as well say "liberals are nuts". That is a argument that seems to have worked well for the right.

"John Wayne Gacy was a Democrat, if you'll recall" - I don't recall, but I'll give you that without argument. Since 80% of serial killers seem to share the Republican's so-called "family values", is it not more likely that a serial killer is a Repub?

"I see absolutely ZERO chance of a debate involving the political affiliation of a SERIAL KILLER as convincing so much as a single voter to support our party and its candidates" - I used to think the same way. I often wondered how a "debate" about the political affiliation of someone that supports a woman's right to choice (defined by the right as Baby killers), or the political affiliation of someone that advocates social security (defined by the right as a "socialist"), or the political affiliation of someone that feels strongly that religion and politics should not mix (defined by the right as "godless"), or the political affiliation of someone who demands accountability for the money spent on the military (defined by the right as "cheese eating French surrender monkeys), or the political affiliation of someone that supports public education (defined by the right as "communist indoctrination), .....could possibly convince a SINGLE voter to support a Republican or conservative candidate??!! Then I saw it with my own eyes.

and here is, hopefully, my coherent explanation for bringing this up. My intent with this post was to stimulate some dialog about how brutally successful the right has been in defining Democrats by our extremes, and whether it was possible to define Republicans by their extremes. I'm not saying doing so would be correct. I just wanted to point out that the other side has done things similar to this for the past 30 years. Can't argue with their success can you?

7. Values
Claiming that the BTK killer represents repug or xian values is akin to claiming John Lee Malvo represents the values of the African American Community.

They use the word like they own it.

I hide their bigotries behind the word "values."

8. I agree. They repeat the same insults over and over and over . . .
until they have other Democrats thinking, "We need to change our party," Our party is on a disaster course." "If we don't quote scripture and praise all that is Busy, the Democratic Party will all but implode.

I am so sick of this myself.

Speaking of the BTK murderer, I remember them saying that he was in charge of something (sorry cannot remember), and that he would even use a ruler to measure people's grass.

My parents (both 75), right after they both retired at 62, decided that the family home was just too big for just them and too much for my dad to keep up with as far as upkeep. They sold the house (I'm 45 and not over this yet -- just kidding but miss our old home). They found a retirement community that was a mobile home park. The mobile home they purchased was absolutely beautiful and this particular mobile home park is impeccable.

I found it so funny when I heard that this obviously Republican, anal retentive, serial killer did this because at the mobile home park where my parents live, the people that "run" it, not "own" it, do the same thing. They use a 12 inch wooden ruler and go around measuring people's grass. No kidding. They only allow people to mow on Monday through Thursday. They constantly patrol looking to see if someone has more than 2 cars in their parking area(not allowed); to see if someone forgot to pick up their dog poop; also, looking for any cigarette butts; as well as anything they think you are not doing right. It's laughable at times. Some people cannot handle the slightest bit of power. Kinda like Bush. LOL

tarring with a broad brush, so to speak.

besides, Gacy was really a repuke masquerading as a Dem because that's where all the good looking potential victims are.

We need to get in the public's mind to make the same connection with Republicans that they make mentally when they here the words Priest and Young Males.

18. By all means, feel free to make the argument about Repubs/serial killers
Don't do it in my area, though; we've actually succeeded in breaking the republican stranglehold on power here, and I'd prefer not to have our new Democratic voters go running back into the arms of the Republican party.

and Gingrich's ridiculous list of hyperbole muck to sling at non-repukes

and Hannity, O'Really, et al's decades of unsupportable attacks

and the Swift Boat Liars' lies

and on and on and on and on

have relusted in gaping ass wounds for the right?

when three knife-wielding thugs jump you in the alley you don't resond by offering to discuss the niceties of civilized behavior.

23. Here is Precisely Why Some of Us Are Fed Up and Ready to Fight
http://mediamatters.org/items/200503010005

"From the February 28 edition of FOX News' Hannity & Colmes:

COULTER: I don't think stupid and evil don't exist in the world, but I notice that Howard Dean doesn't give any examples. This is a party that supports killing, lying, adultery, thievery, envy.

ALAN COLMES (co-host): That's ridiculous.

COULTER: And they're going to call -- I mean, the platform is violating the Ten Commandments one by one. And they're talking about evil?"

Right now there is a conservative commentator and radio host that has a book out entitled "Deliver Us From Evil; Defeating Terrorism, Despotism and Liberalism".

He's not saying you or I are misguided or wrong. He's not saying that you or I disagree with him on policy, or the direction of the country. He's saying that you and I are EVIL!!! He's equating us with terrorism and despotism!!!

I think pointing out to his listeners that the bind, torture and kill serial murderer is a Republican is fair game, don't you?

24. Yes They Were!!!
A couple of NRA gun toting, uneducated, neanderthal conservatives, whose only way of solving problems or addressing issues is through violence. Also former military. I thought Repukes would embrace these people.

Imagine, someone offended by painting with a broad brush??
I guess you know how I feel now. Even though I

- proudly wear the uniform of my country
- have proudly volunteered and served my country for the past 21 years
- regularly attend church with my family and have a strong faith
- have been married only once
- do not commit adultery
- enjoy NASCAR and professional "wrassling"

etc....

I am painted as an Un-American Communist, or WORSE, 24/7/365 by the right-wing noise machine.

I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!
