Group plans campaign against gay TV show

By ALLISON FARRELL, IR State Bureau - 09/10/03

HELENA - The politically conservative Montana Family Coalition is planning a media campaign against the new television show ''Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,'' claiming that the reality-based show featuring five gay men is ''trash'' and shouldn't be on TV.

The coalition's executive director said it plans to inform advertisers who air commercials during the one-hour show that their ad falls during a program the Montana Family Coalition (formerly the Montana Christian Coalition) calls ''outrageous'' and a ''joke.''

''To me, that's not a reality show about gay people,'' said Julie Millam, who said she watched clips from the show. ''A really good reality show for gay people would be five gay men dying of AIDS.''

<<<<<<more>>>>>>

You know, I'd almost expect groups like the Montana Family Coalition to go up against shows like Queer Eye, but for their leader to say something horrible about b]'A really good reality show for gay people would be five gay men dying of AIDS.'' needs to realize that cooments like that are nothing more than HATE crimes. These people disgust me with the way they think they know what Jesus would do. Surely the Son of God would not say such horrible things like this!!!

1. Let 'Em Have Their "Fun"
Nothing attracts people to one's cause like making a fool of oneself in public.

That's why I'm not too upset at Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps. He's probably turned more Christians toward the cause of human rights for gays than any other religious leader in the last five years.

(OK, maybe excepting the Dalai Lama.)

21. You may be onto something. People like Phelps made me realize I,
as a Christian, had to speak out AS A CHRISTIAN.

God loves everyone, even those who don't love him/her/it/them.

3. how about some pitbulls instead
Seems to be an overpopulation of pitbulls. They could be our modern day lions. Just don't toss us real believes of Jesus in with the bunch. Just the quazi Christians like this Montana Group.

5. Montana's just north of Wyoming
the very place where Matthew Shephard (sp?) was murdered. And the home of numerous white-supremacist "survivalist" groups.

Maybe if we beg, we can get Canada to invade? :eyes:

26. Montana and Wyoming are WAY different
Montana is more along the lines of a good purple like Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona etc. Wyoming is more along the lines of bright red like Idaho, Utah, and Nebraska....

but still only about 60 standard channels, plus almost 100 unused (premium, ppv, dmx).

7. this is both offensive and laughable
I won't even address the AIDS comment. bullshit like that doesn't deserve the dignity of a response.

This is the laughable part:
The coalition's executive director said it plans to inform advertisers who air commercials during the one-hour show that their ad falls during a program the Montana Family Coalition (formerly the Montana Christian Coalition) calls ''outrageous'' and a ''joke.''

Do they even know who the primary sponsors of the show are?!?
http://www.orbitz.com/gaytravel/
and
http://www.disaronno.com/home.html

Somehow, I don't think Orbitz: Gay Travel gives a shit what the Montana Family Coalition has to say.

10. I don't have respect for the MFC
If they have simply said that they don't like the show because they believe homosexuality is a sin, that would have been fine. I wouldn't have agreed with that assessment, but at least things would have been civil. I am just disgusted at their view however that a good reality show for gay people would be five gay men dying of AIDS. That is just terrible.

11. I think that's why I'm angered and I had to post this
So-Called "Christian" groups like the Montana Family Council go out of their way to boycott stuff left and right. It's an everyday happening and if we posted everytime a "Christian" group decided to boycott, DU would run out of server space.

But that comment I bolded 'A really good reality show for gay people would be five gay men dying of AIDS.', is pure pure hate at it's absolute worse. Julie Millam was the person who made that comment and when we let crap like that slide we're saying it's 'OK' to say hateful things. And the problem is, people will read or hear this awful hate stuff and think then it's ok to do horrible things to Gays & Lesbians because that's the message they are getting from the "Christian" community leaders.

This only came out on Wednesday and I picked it up today from the IMDB Studio Briefings (http://www.imdb.com/StudioBrief/#13). I plan to write a tactful letter to this Julie Milliam and tell her that HATE is not a very Christian value. I think she owes the public an apology for such a horrible comment!!!

12. Entire State of Montana < 1 Million * Queer Eye Viewers > 3.5 Million
Just to put things in some, how shall we say, perspective?

Of course, this will give the very lonely folks who call themselves with grand self-rightousness, the Montana Family Coalition, something to do on those cold nights when they can't find furry animals to hump.

not *everyone* in Montana (or Wyoming or Idaho) are as bad as the MFC. There are idiots everywhere. (But just happen to be in greater concentration up north :-)

(and I believe the south owns the monopoly on mullets!)

25. idiot watch...
Apparently you've never been to Dallas, TX.
It almost seems that there is some sort of secret tax incintive for hateful religious bigots to breed or recruit.

I saw a bumper sitcker on a car (in Dallas) the other day that said:
This isn't only time God has spoken through a Bush.

You can't take two steps without running in to those types of people here.

They routinely have major typos in press releases and the newspapers make fun of them when reproduced in articles.

And whether they outnumber supporters of PRIDE: http://www.gaymontana.com/pride/

And a big RASPBERRY to the Montana dissers! Montana has progressives too! :P

Edit: In case it isn't crystal clear, I am disgusted by the MFC and will be writing them a nasty letter. They give the words "Montana," "Family" and "Coalition" a bad name!

31. Being a Montanan myself
who now lives in Tucson, Az, I can thoroughly say that Montana hicks are about as bigoted and narrow minded as conservative Southern rednecks. This is not to say all of these two groups of people are bigoted, but the area seems to be full of ignorance, myth and lack of a perspective of a world outside their own. Many are Bush supporters for the dumbest reasons you could imagine. This stuff never surprises me at all. I lived it. Small town life is very constricting if you a a critical thinker and progressive populist.
