The more you scream the more they flee.
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 09:05 PM by Ripley
I'm kind of tired of these hysterical subject lines. Got a problem? Come on into DU GD and air it in front of everyone. And hey, you might increase the number of people willing to tell you about their own personal problems!

It's a free board, but DAMN, do folks have to be so flagrant in order to get their political statement out?

I find it hard to recommend this board to people who are very curious about politics, because I think it can be offensive because of the constant navel-gazing folks who are intent on making this their personal board. I'm not in favor of banning the "fuck" word, but do you really have to put it in the subject line?

People want into the DU discussion...let's not turn them away immediately.

On edit: Starpass, how many times can you say fuck in an hour?

2. Agreed
And can't we direct the sexual exhibitionists,( i.e., oooooh, I'm SO wicked, I titled a thread with phrases like wet pussies or small cocks) to some porn blog? I mean, it's just crude for the sake of shock. YES, you can say it but why are you compelled to say it here? What about limiting ourselves to language that would not be considered offensive by a political candidate talking to people in their own home. That's basically what we are about. I can use all kinds of foul language if I choose, and have, on occasion, but only in front of people whom I know will not be offended or shocked by it.

4. So does your candidate use foul language when talking to voters?
I very much doubt it. What we are about here is reaching out to convince as many as possible to vote Bush out of office.

6. I sure as hell hope so
Maybe not fuck, but it was refreshing to hear Graham say "not just no, but hell no". My mother didn't tell me to watch my mouth as often as people on this board seem to.

13. "hell no" is extremely mild - no shocker there.
As to the much stronger stuff we see here, there is all the difference in the world between talking with your friends and peers, and writing on a blog with 30,000 plus members and who knows how many "lurkers". Teenagers or twenty or thirty-something people usually do not talk the same to their parents' or grandparents' generation as they do among themselves. It's pretty basic communications logic that you don't get a message across to people whom you offend. You realize how close some elections are? A friend of mine recently lost a local govt. election to a Republican by
SIX VOTES. I could care less how you talk anywhere else in your life (but I bet you watch your mouth with people like customers, clients, bosses, or the clerk who checks out your groceries). But what do you gain by spouting language here which you know is going to offend at least some of the people reading it?

22. Well, you didn't just describe me
My twenty something kids talk to me anyway they want to. My parents have become accustomed over the years to understand that I talk the way I want to. And while I generally wouldn't use foul language the first time I met someone, over a course of time, it usually just becomes a part of the relationship. Because you know what, I don't have time for people who are going to stick their nose up and walk away over the word fuck. Not when I know the real shit people do in their every day lives.

So I just strongly disagree with the whole premise. And maybe if your friend had called out the fucking Republicans a bit more, he would have had 500 twenty-somethings in the voting booth!

10. How am I sanctimonious?
Because I think Starpass uses the term "fuck" like others use the word "uh"?

This is not a censorship thread my dear. Just an observation.

Just that he isn't.

It just seems if people got as upset over hunger and disease as they do over cuss words and Madonna's kisses, we might get alot more accomplished in this world.

19. No. It seems to me that people would be
interested in getting more folks informed about the shit world we are in because of AWOL. And when I have to hesitate to send my aquaintances here because of the fuck fuck fuck headlines...well. it doesn't do us any good in informing those people.

I'm not shy of the word, obviously, but some folks use it as a beacon for their own personal use.

Sorry if you disagree sandnsea...I think our goal is the same.

23. As far as new people
If you're talking about sending new folks here for info, I would bet that the posts that say the terrorists aren't real and Bush caused 9/11 would cause them to run quicker than "fuck". Lots of things in this board are out of the 'mainstream', alot further out than that word!

9. Thanks, Ripley.
I hesitate to send anyone to here to the forum right now. I do see that some here have only one purpose in life, to tear down other candidates.

Some I used to respect greatly are totally different now.

I agree, it is getting too much. Too angry.

11. It's a matter of judgement
Not one towards another, but within the person. If that persons judgement is adolescent/juvenile in nature, then they are likely to lead with emotion. It's their choice to do so as long as the current posting rules stay in effect. I just avoid them mostly. I don't need FUCK with ten exclamation points to convince me that a post is worth looking into. That's just me, though. I don't care what others do. I guess ignore is an option, but I don't want to use that either.

12. Ripley....while I agree with you....we get a new member every day..and
we are over 30,000 now......Maybe we are attracting folks who like "freer speech." ;-)

However, "free speech" isn't always more coherent speech or speech that says anything of consequence...

But, that's appealing the way "Reality Shows" are appealing to some folks.......so....what to do.???

14. Gratuitous Hype posts are too prevalent here...
It looks like a high school board at times....

You know what I mean.

I am not in any way advocating censorship, just asking some long time posters to quit begging for attention by using the stupid words.

If you find the decline in GD appealing, maybe I should just leave.

:hi:

16. Don't Go!
Some posters will continue the juvenile approach. They really can't control themselves. But I think your reminder will influence a lot of other posters to think about how they present their ideas, and if they are serious and not just screaming exhibitionists, they'll keep the language generally acceptable for an audience of all ages
