I Met my First Honest-to-God Republican today
I live in Southwest Georgia, probably 10 miles away from President Carter. So let me explain my living situation. There are Republicans, but they're only Republicans because they think Democrats are out to get their religious freedom. And there are conservatives, but they're Democrats.

This guy contacted some of my friends and said that he'd pay us to help him move. (100 bucks each) Anyway, we went to his house and everything got weird.

The guy's name was Bob, an Italian from California. Here are some highlights from my afternoon.

He talked about money the whole time. He'd bought a new house and thought he "stole it" just because the lady sold it for under the appraisal. He thought the lady was really a sucker, and he was proud.

He thought the land in Georgia was pretty, and acted like it was some sort of commodity. He talked about bringing California dollars over and making huge cash off of Georgia land. (To which I thought in my head "barf", "vomit", "carpetbagger," "Alaskan wildlife reserve"

After he found out that I was a Christian, he looked weird. After he found out I didn't like Bush, he said I was being "indoctrinated with the wrong philosophies...blah, blah, etc..

And the Grand Finale...he said this: If you're young and not a Democrat, you have no heart, but if you're old and not a Republican, you've got no brains." (He went on and on about how smart he was.)

And this was my first encounter with a REAL republican.

THE END

2. My dad says that closing quote all of the time
I've noticed that it seems to be a popular way for conservatives to dismiss anything said by anyone under the age of 35. One more way that lot likes to stick their collective heads in the sand.

The quote originated from Churchill, supposedly (though in the original, "liberal" goes where Democrat is, and "conservative" goes where Republican is.)

Just think, people like that are why we've got to keep fighting, otherwise you'll have all of America under the sway of assholes like that.

Not usually a source of optimism, but there you go

15. Seeing them for what they are
The Party membership does not exhibit sufficient diversity--or for that matter, presense--of thought for the minions to be viewed as individuals. They are a monolithically degenerate hive 'mind' and should be pitied as such.

4. variation of the old saying
If you're young and not a socialist, you have no heart
If you're old and not a conservative, you have no brain.

Like many old sayings, it's bull.

I've never been a socialist. I've never been a conservative. And if you run your life from old sayings, you ain't thinking, you're just going through the motions.

From Georges Clemenceau

"A man who is young and not a communist has no heart, a man who is no longer young and still a communist has no head."

There are different variations at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5952/unquote.html

I think RWers like to quote it as Churchill because most of them have no clue who Clemenceau was...

17. thanks
for posting the original quote. I've always wondered about the historical context of the saying. I hate to admit it,but there have no doubt been times in the past when liberals weren't on target, just as there have been times when conservatives were way out of whack(as in now). Some quotes stand up to the test of time. Others,if they were ever true at all, only work for a specific time period.

Egads! I haven't been so lucky. I've heard all the mindless quotes, 'A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged' and 'Why don't you leave the country/get a job/get an education?'. Blah, blah, blah. As for the quote that arrogant jerk gave you, I disagree. If you're a Republican when you're old, it's because you've let yourself become a close-minded bigot. The mind tries to close like a trap, as we age, unless we keep it active and continually question the thoughts that pass through it.

6. I've heard that last quote a bunch of times
And it really makes no sense to me as one can think of a number of people who are old (or not young anyway) who are Democrats or liberals. Most of our congressmen are middle-aged or old.

F that quote and F that guy. Nothing like rash generalizations to explain the world. I know plenty of older Dems who have lived long, fulfilling and prosperous lives...they just aren't heartless greedy fuckers that like guy.

7. Yup, they just bring a tear to your eye, don't they?
Try another Republican shark who boasts because he figured out a way to make money when his ex-wife's own apartment sustained too much water damage to be habitable. Her insurance covered rental so he put her up in the spare room in his house and charged her a high sum, which, of course, the insurance paid. But, hey, it's okay, because he shared the money with her. "Greedy" doesn't do it justice.

including my own family. I live in Naples, Florida and it is REALLY hard to find any Democrats down here. It's making me nuts. It does lead to some interesting conversations - but not a lot of popularity!

14. Do you know about the Guy James Show?
He's on the radio in Naples and streams live on the internet on Saturday afternoons, 3-6pm. He's also a poster here and goes by the name of BeachBuckeye.

It's a hilarious and informative show.

It made my day. Can't believe that there's a liberal talk show host and show her in Naples.

Surprised they haven't run him off!

I'm going to have to start listening. I never listen to a.m. radio.

and he also said that he couldn't believe how much the state of Georgia regulated business, and that people would revolt in California if they tried that. Not sure how factual that it, but it was funny anyway.

19. My personal Freeper at work...
Calls me a Commie all the time, but I never let him get the last word, not that that's so hard... Anyway a couple of weeks ago, his father, who lives in another town, had a stroke and he had to take a couple of days off to help out with "Dad".

Today, he told me that he was going down to check on his dad, I felt sorry for him, and putting my nausea aside, consoled him and told him that I hoped everything would be OK. Sensing my sypathetic mood, he spilled his guts about the real reasons for his concern for Dad. Some "bimbo" (his descriptor for this 58-year old woman) had moved in with Dad, and the whole family was up in arms. They're scared witless that Daddums will leave everything (or something) to her in his will!!!! Nothing about how his father is recuperating, nothing about who, if not this "bimbo" will take care of dad.....nothing but the money.
From now on, this guy can find real concern somewhere else... almost makes me happy to be insolvent!

Once you get past the initial shock, you can kinda get used to them.

32. Ask anybody who quotes Churchill what
HE meant by the words "Liberal" vs. "Conservative",
and what they have meant to people in various countries and at various times who have used those terms.
Those two words are so ambiguous that they don't even mean the same thing for the SAME PERSON, from one day to the next!

But I give Liberal Democrats great reasons to be proud of calling themselves "Liberal" AT ANY AGE at http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Liberals
