Will Dean speak out against the disenfranchisement of Blacks in MI?
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 06:20 AM by Gman
I posted the article in LBN but it's not getting the discussion I thought it would.

For the first time, the Michigan Democratic Party is planning to allow party members to vote for the party's presidential nominee via the Internet, as well as by attending the Feb. 7 caucus or mailing in a ballot.

Al Sharpton sent a letter to Dean Thursday, challenging the former Vermont governor to oppose the Internet voting plan. Dean's campaign has focused on building support from Web users.

I wonder how Dean will respond to this. If Dean supports this Internet voting plan his credibility with Black voters will be shot. If Dean supports this plan he'll be branded a white elitist and rightfully so. Poor Blacks in Detroit don't have computers at home with Internet access. Is Dean going to participate in the disenfranchisement of Black voters in Detroit?

Is disenfranchising poor Blacks in Detroit Dean's way of "taking back" the Democratic Party?

Does Dean have what it takes to fill the shoes of the first Black president of the United States by saying he'll have no part of this modern day Jim Crow practice?

An answer of "well, they can still go to the caucus or mail in a ballot" does not hold water as the Internet voting, fraud issues aside, encourages the turnout of upper middle class white geeks that don't have to go out in the cold to a caucus or mess with a snail mail ballot.

Here's the LBN post:http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=111641

1. Absolutely, there is so much opportunity for fraud with electronic voting.

Plus not just for Blacks but for Latinos across the country. But I think there will be many whites who will be outraged too considering 2000.
