Howard Zinn NEW COLUMN ** Excellent **
Howard Zinn has a new column on Iraq and it's a beauty:

http://www.progressive.org/oct03/zinn1003.html

Also, The Progressive has brought their "HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES" calendar back for 2004! I had missed it when they stopped. A GREAT calendar to remind us of days that never should have been forgotten in the first place.

1. Why are the old ones smart?
I have been recommended Zinn's book many times but whenever I find it in a bookstore I dont have the money. Zinn makes a lot of sense I can see why so many people recommend this book.

2. John - His book
John - Zinn's book is a classic - a MUST-READ. This is one you HAVE to read before you start college. Hell, I'll SEND you the money! You simply have to read this and then --- pass it on to your friends!

5. John -
Go to the library! Zinn's A People's History of the United States is an absolute must read for you now.

If you want to purchase it, then buy it used. (Go to Amazon.com used books.)

Either way, read it soon. I wish a book like Zinn's had been around when I was in HS. It would have answered so many questions I had back then.

17. Yes, it is.
The one I saw in B&N had chapters on the Clinton Presidency and the 2000 Election. They should be selling the same one on Amazon.

15. I'm reading it now, John
It certainly is a must. I'm about halfway through- it's dense and definitely a History book (hope you like History) but it is very informative essential to forming a REAL picture of American History, not just what "they" want ya to learn.

I borrowed a friend's and it's paperback. I think I've seen it at B&N for around $25-30.

6. Here is a good snippet:
<snip>
. Those millions of people in this country who are not citizens and therefore, by the Patriot Act, are subject to being pulled out of their homes and held indefinitely by the FBI, with no constitutional rights--those people are not alien to me. But this small group of men who have taken power in Washington, they are alien to me.

I wake up thinking this country is in the grip of a President who was not elected, who has surrounded himself with thugs in suits who care nothing about human life abroad or here, who care nothing about freedom abroad or here, who care nothing about what happens to the earth, the water, the air. And I wonder what kind of world our children and grandchildren will inherit. More Americans are beginning to feel, like the soldiers in Iraq, that something is terribly wrong, that this is not what we want our country to be.

13. There's another GREAT Zinn Book
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 03:08 PM by JasonBerry
As good as Zinn's A People's History of the United States is there is another Zinn book that I think made as big an impression on me. It's called You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train : A Personal History of Our Times. It is Zinn's own story - very moving and extremely powerful.

People's History Info:
